Cancellation is challenging. I thought I had cancelled soon after purchasing last year to access a couple of items, but there was an autorenewal increasing the cost from approximately USD 160 to USD 272 on December 22nd. While I had not intended to renew at all, I was even more appalled by the fact that there was a massive price hike without justification of new features and informing customers and giving them an opportunity to cancel as a result. I see from other reviewers that I am not alone in being appalled at this unethical practice.

I went to check my bank account after Christmas to discover that this organisation had made an unauthorised withdrawal from my account of £333.60. I never had a paid service - their premium service, and I definitely did not authorise this transaction. To make things worse when I went onto the website I had not even been granted access to the supposed Premium services.
I challenged the unauthorised withdrawal within 2 days of it being made and received an unhelpful response stating that the organisation did not refund subscriptions (even though I had never had a subscription). I then applied further pressure and can confirm that a full refund was provided. While I am relieved to have had the refund the situation should never have arisen in the first place.
I would caution you not to have anything to do with this business as my experience is completely unfavourable.

They are very untrustworthy since they do not play clean, this people keeps sending you unsolicited e-mails and when you try to unsubscribe, they give millions of other options of junk they will sent unless you tick off (Once, otherwise it ticks back on) “After” doing that, you "Have to save” each list of options. and then you have to click the link “Stop All” emails because this dishonest people they put another link close that says “For this Email” this people are using “euphemisms, words with hidden implicatons” etc that they can later show that “You clicked them Voluntarily”
They are obviously trying to trick you into something.
As said they are very untrustworthy.

Just read my review and realize that they just give you generic information that every body knows but they do not address the fact that they "FORCE" YES "FORCE" to tick off a number of boxes or. "THEY WILL KEEP SENDING YOU JUNK" BUT THIS TIME THEY WILL CLAIMTHAT IT WAS "BASED ON YOUR SLECECTION" but they do not tell you that they "Force" your selection.
So thank you incompentent employee who just made my point when you were trying to justify yourselves.

Created an account in Aug 25. Tried the premium service, and cancelled it during the trial period. Then on 15 Dec 25 they bill me $299 for a premium account. 4 months later? Funny thing, when I went to my account it says that I don't have premium. Contacted them on 16 Dec 25 and asked to cancel my premium account, and refund me. They said they would cancel my auto-renewal, but would not refund my money. Fortunately they charged my pay-pal, and pay-pal refunded me.

Scam. Do not use this "service." I paid for one-time access, and like many others, was scammed with an auto renewal I never authorized, at a much higher price. I was then locked out of my account for "suspicious behavior" (simply signing in with a username and password). Fortunately my bank caught the transaction and contacted me so I was able to block it. It's fraud, period. My bank will be looking into it. This has to stop.

Cancled three years ago, they keep charged me £165 each year since, they now owe me £355 and won’t retirn emails also can’t contact customer services. AVOID

I got an email from these dirtbags and I never even heard of them.

Trash website that gatekeeps academic papers by forcing you to sign up because one cannot do research in peace without this garbage meddling with any attempts to study.

Even after confirming my account by email I couldn't log on because of infintely recurring captchas. I can't even say this is a legitimate site and not some kind of phishing scam.

I mistakenly left the auto-renewal on after the trial period. I reached out to them as soon as the charge appeared, but they insisted a refund was impossible. I then filed a dispute through PayPal and ultimately received my money back. Very bad way to treat your users

I am very disappointed. ResearchGate is better.

Garbage scam website that has functionally stolen my papers and locked them behind a paywall. I will never give these criminals a cent.

THIEVES is how I can describe this company . If you have been unfortunate and got onto their mailing list, they email you saying that your company has a new important information on their page ,
And make you click on the link ,if you are an idiot like me and then they actually subscribe you forcefully so that you can read this article that doesn’t exist And then after they take your pound and you can try to cancel and then they take £82 out of your bank account while you are not even registered with them so it is absolute fraud a scam whatever your name is I hope they get shut down and made obselete … They are thieving bastards and there is nothing useful on this website. Avoid like the plague, they are disgusting money, Grabbing scamming so and so’s .

they changed their terms on refunds and subsriptions.
1. . Automatic storage and reuse of payment data.
2. Monthly and annual Subscriptions renew automatically by default, using the stored payment method, with no explicit commitment to send a reminder before each renewal (especially for annual plans). The burden is entirely on you to remember to cancel in time.
3. They may change Subscription terms and the Subscription Fee “in our discretion” by emailing you. If you “do not agree” you must cancel; if you don’t cancel, your silence counts as acceptance. This is one-sided, especially if the notice is easy to miss or goes to spam. (THEY USUALLY DO NOT NOTICE)
4. It’s “your duty” to keep your email address current, and if you miss a change of terms/price because of an email issue, that’s your problem, not theirs—yet those changes still bind you unless you cancel.
5. They “reserve the right to modify or terminate Free Trial or Discounted Trials at any time, without notice.” That means the promotional conditions can change mid-stream from the user’s perspective.

THESE ARE THE IMPORTANT ONES. BEFORE YOU WERE ABLE TO GET A REFUND.

When you become a pensionist, you should be aware that subscriptions which have been paid for you by your employer may be charged you privately. That happened to me; a total of 1482 USD was drawn from my Mastercard account by Academia.edu before I really understood the situation and managed to cancel the account (using their 'feedback' email address). My Mastercard was charged twice a year, and I received no prewarnings or other type of information.

When searching for scientific literature on Internet, please note that assistance from Academia.edu can be quite costly. If you leave credit card information on their web page once, you too are likely to get your credit card charged yearly without any relevant information or prewarning.

They charged £165.60 for annual subscription without my authority and with my account showing that I'm not a premium member, so cannot cancel what I do not have. The fee was double last year's. It's most difficult to get any sense from them. From being a fairly useful academic service, it is now an unscrupulous money grabber.
