Planning a vacation can be complicated, especially when you factor in camping safaris on land and water, hotels in remote villages and meal preparation to cater to diverse dietary needs. These are all real concerns and shouldn’t be underestimated. However thanks to the team at AOT I was constantly in communication from start to finish. I understand they manage many travellers but somehow they made me feel valued and cared for. I’ve used AOT for two vacation itineraries and I’m already thinking about my next adventure.

Trust African Overland to take away your stress and worry
As someone who normally travels solo, I recognized that when it comes to Africa and embarking upon a safari experience, I didn't know what I didn't know. African Overland Tours understands this and did everything possible to make the experience painless and stress free. When working with Lee, she guided me through everything I needed to know and do beforehand. In short, there were no surprises; no hidden costs; nothing to cause worry or second guessing.
The actual safari experience was amazing. Our drivers were courteous and professional; the meals were plentiful and filling; seats for an East African drive were as comfortable as could be expected. Accommodations in many cases exceeded my expectations. In summary, if you're going to embark upon an African safari, you need a company you can trust to guide you through the wide range of questions you're going to have. African Overland Tours is that company. I hope to do another African safari in the future and if I do, I'll contact these guys. I can't say enough good things about Lee and her ability to answer all my concerns and to help make what was going to be a memorable experience even better!

There is a very specific kind of magic to traveling solo, but Africa certainly has a way of reminding us just how vast and wild the world is! Hearing that you recognized the need for a little local guidance, and that Lee was able to completely remove the stress of the unknown for you, is so deeply rewarding for us to read.
We always say that our biggest job is ensuring there are zero surprises when it comes to the logistics—like hidden costs or tricky paperwork—so that the only surprises you experience are the breathtaking wildlife sightings on the road. Lee is wonderful at mapping out those fine details, and she was so touched by your kind words about her support.

Our AOT agent made excellent May 2024 tour suggestions for Sth Africa, Botswana & Namibia, and guided us to book sensible tours for our abilities and age that were cobbled together inside our time frames… the knowledge imparted was very helpful. Our airline and hotel bookings went smoothly. Our AOT agent even communicated with one of our tour guides so that she could actually meet us at one of our coffee stops as we passed through her location in Sth Africa. I have recommended AOT to friends & am and currently using them again to organise my movements between three tours in East Africa. One of my ‘current’ tour companies cancelled their tour. My AOT agent helped me select an alternative tour & organised a full refund from the original tour company. Service couldn’t be better.

Brilliant support from Minette and African Overland Tours.
Brilliant support by Minette in booking our 55 day trip through Africa. We bombarded Minette with questions about so many aspects of the trip - visas, vaccinations, equipment etc. Throughout, she remained patient and answered questions with such positivity. There were various options available and with support from Minette we chose the long camping experience.
The trip was absolutely amazing and was the most incredible experience of our lives. I can't thank African Overland Tours for their support and guidance.

Please never worry about "bombarding" us with questions—especially for a journey of that magnitude. Figuring out visas, vaccination requirements, and packing lists for multiple countries can feel daunting, and taking that weight off your shoulders is exactly what we are here for. Minette genuinely loved working with you to piece all the logistics together, and she was so invested in making sure you felt completely confident before you even packed your bags.

Will not find a better tour company like AOT
We booked capetown to vic falls 21 day safari,about 12/12 before the trip and since the initialbooking they have been fantastic with advice confirmations of details etc etc.
They are available 7 days a week with replies within 24 hrs. We dealt with Melissa but if she was out of the office , another team member would reply , once again within 24 hrs.
Melissa even tried to help me with obtaining a product from the tour operator after the trip was over(I was very keen to get a tee shirt our tour leader and driver was wearing). The tour that African overland tours recommended to us based on our likes/dislikes run by Kiboko was likewise excellent.
Melissa-was very interested in our thoughts of the trip , photos etc after the tour finished.
I have travelled to many countries over many yrs and I have yet to find any other tour company like AFRICAN OVERLAND TOURS that has matched them in professionalism , efficiency ,support and advice from the moment of booking with them ,no matter how long prior to the trip.
The company comes very highly recommended by us and we will certainly use them again for our future planned trips to Africa

I am so glad the Kiboko tour was the perfect fit for your travel style—matching our clients with the right on-the-ground experience is exactly what we strive for.
It is always a pity when the famous Cape Town weather doesn't cooperate for Table Mountain, but ensuring you received your refund promptly is just part of how we do things. We want you to feel looked after from day one until long after your bags are unpacked.

An In-Depth and Constructive Critique
We recently took a 42-day trip through Africa (July–August 2024) booked via African Overland Tours and operated by Nomad. We paid around EUR 14,000 (USD 450 per day) for two people. Unfortunately, it turned out to be our most disappointing travel experience to date. Here is our account of the issues we encountered, shared in hopes that future travelers will be better informed, and that these companies will address their shortcomings.
1. Minimal Activities, Excessive Downtime
• Only about 3% of our first 10 days involved actual activities (e.g., a short safari, brief village walks, a coffee plantation visit). The rest—some 97% of the time—was spent in a cramped truck (8–15 hours daily) or in budget lodges with nothing planned.
2. Uncomfortable Transportation
• The truck seats were very tight for anyone over 175 cm (5’9”), and the microphone did not work. Filtered-water mechanisms were outdated, forcing travelers to rely on questionable water sources.
• We often ate breakfast or lunch while driving on roads filled with bumps, risking spills and discomfort.
• Our group ranged from about 15 to 75 years old; older travelers struggled greatly with the lack of comfort.
3. Lack of Professional Guidance
• We had only a driver and a cook, neither qualified to serve as an actual tour guide. We received no substantial information about local culture, history, geology, fauna, or ecosystems.
• Complaints or suggestions were brushed off with remarks like “complaints will disturb the peace of the crew, the clients, and the company.”
4. Substandard Accommodations and Extra Costs
• Roughly 90% of the lodges were low-budget establishments (USD 30–60), often without hot water—or any water at times. Only 3 of 35 were decent.
• Additional fees for game drives, excursions, and even basic drinks like water quickly added up (e.g., USD 350 for a Tanzanian game drive).
• Travel breaks were limited to malls or fuel stations, rarely involving scenic or cultural stops.
5. Overreliance on Guests’ Labor
• Meals were rushed to about 30 minutes. Guests had to set up tables, chairs, assist with cooking, and clean dishes. It felt like we were doing staff tasks rather than relaxing on vacation.
6. Poor Communication and Organization
• No one checked if travelers had correct documents, and there was no guidance on border crossings. Room assignments at lodges were random, forcing guests to sort things out themselves.
• Time management was erratic. A “30-minute” stop could stretch to over an hour without warning.
7. Dismissive Customer Support
• African Overland Tours took a week or more to reply to emails and offered no real solutions. When we called, the representative interrupted constantly and blamed us rather than taking responsibility.
• We ultimately left three days early with no refund for unused accommodations. When lodging was overbooked and we had to camp instead of staying in a room, there was no apology or compensation.
8. African Overland Tours: A Middleman Concerned with Sales
• They pressured us to decide quickly, implying limited availability. They charge a significant markup over Nomad’s base price but provide no added value, functioning more like sales agents than travel experts.
9. Overall Assessment
• While the natural beauty of Africa’s parks and cities shone through (no thanks to the operators), the disorganization, lack of guidance, and poor service tarnished the experience.
• For the cost, we expected a professional guide, comfortable travel, and a well-planned itinerary. Instead, it felt like corners were cut at every opportunity.
Recommendation
We strongly recommend seeking alternative agencies. Based on our experience, it would be hard to find a more poorly organized operation than African Overland Tours and Nomad. We hope this review prompts them to improve and deliver the quality service that travelers deserve when discovering such a magnificent continent.

We’re sorry your experience didn’t meet expectations, but some of your statements about African Overland Tours are false and misleading.
I'll address the inaccuracies:
Rate Parity: We always ensure rate parity with tour operators. Charging more would undermine the industry, and we’re transparent about this. While we offer complimentary pre/post-tour services, you chose to book these independently.
First Notification of Discomfort: We only learned of your unhappiness on day 29 when guides reported you were swearing at crew members. We were asked to address this behavior, as it’s unacceptable.
Lack of Communication: Our last email from you was on July 24, 2024. Minette reached out, asking you to detail your concerns in writing for resolution. You never responded to her.
Early Departure: You left the tour without informing us. We were notified by Nomad on August 28. Minette followed up, but you never replied.
Sales Tactics: We don’t use high-pressure tactics. We adapt to your preferred communication method (WhatsApp, email, video calls) and respect your boundaries. Minette provided detailed information about long driving times, and extended your provisional reservation six times to accommodate your requests.
Your critique lacks constructive feedback, focusing instead on misinformation. Photos from your tour tell a different story.
We should have recognised that an overland tour wasn’t right for you. Overlanding is about the journey—embracing unpredictability, forming connections, and stepping out of your comfort zone. It’s not for everyone, we should have recommended a package holiday instead.
Minette shared videos, packing lists, and detailed pre-departure information, which mentioned long driving times 16 times. She even negotiated amended terms with the operator for you.
