Advertised discounts not honoured &, after five days of trying, I couldn't even place an order.

If I'd read some of their other 1* reviews about false advertising and poor customer service, I might have saved some time.
Here goes.
Directplants advertise a 15% NHS discount on the Health Service Discounts site which makes them competitive for the shrub I'm after. Unfortunately, the main site doesn't recognise the associated code. No problem, I Google discounts and another comes up - only 10% this time but it's near enough and I'll take the small hit. I add my plant to my cart, go to checkout and the code is accepted, so all good this time - until I come to pay. It won't let me progress beyond that point. I try later, no good. I try a different browser, still no good.
I message Directplants asking for support to complete my order. I send screen shots etc.
To their credit, although it took longer than they say it would, they replied a few days later. They clearly hadn't read my email as they asked what I'd ordered and what the issue was. I explain again. I'm told that the discount code is no longer valid, despite it still being shown as available online and despite it being accepted during the checkout process. I'm told to remove it and then try paying again but at full price. No doing the decent thing and honouring it, just a couple of brief emails telling me to keep trying.
After the best part of a week of attempting to place an order that really shouldn't have been this difficult, I decline their suggestion of continuing to try the same thing yet again in the hope that their website might this time accept my payment. By now, I've done a bit more digging and read their other negative reviews about poor customer service and I've lost confidence in them to put things right if there was any other sort of issue post payment.
This really all feels unnecessarily difficult and could have been resolved without alienating a potential new customer. I get that websites have glitches. I also get that some discounts are time limited. What I struggle with is when retailers do so little to take ownership or even attempt to put things right.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and we are genuinely sorry for the frustration and disappointment caused.

Firstly, we would like to apologise for the confusion regarding the NHS discount. During the Covid period, we did offer an NHS discount as a gesture of appreciation, however this promotion ended some time ago. Unfortunately, an outdated advert remains visible on some third-party websites and search results. We have been actively requesting that these listings be removed or updated, but regrettably some continue to appear online beyond our control.

We also apologise for the confusion caused by the discount code being accepted during checkout despite no longer being valid. We appreciate how frustrating this must have been, particularly after spending considerable time trying to place an order and contacting us for assistance.

We are sorry that our responses did not meet your expectations. Looking back, we understand that the situation could have been handled more effectively and with greater clarity from the outset. We appreciate that website issues and conflicting information online can undermine confidence, and we regret that we were unable to provide a smoother resolution.

Whilst we are disappointed that we were unable to earn your custom, we do appreciate your feedback as it highlights areas where we can improve both our communication and customer experience.

Mis-selling of plants

This business has no complaints procedure. They are in breach of contract for sending my father common green beech trees instead of invoiced purple copper beech trees. They have admitted their fault due to a warehouse error a week ago. After numerous calls and emails since, I am still awaiting tracking notification for the promised trees. BEWARE!

21.5 I accepted the recompense of the correct trees over a week ago with Keiran. These have not been forthcoming. Please advise when my father will receive them.

Hi PP,

Thank you for your review. We completely understand your disappointment, however we do feel it’s important to explain the full situation fairly.

You are correct that a genuine warehouse error occurred during the winter months, where green beech was mistakenly sent instead of copper beech. When beech trees are dormant and without leaves, the varieties can look extremely similar, and unfortunately a member of staff made a human error when dispatching your order. As soon as this was brought to our attention this spring, we accepted responsibility immediately and sincerely apologised.

To resolve the issue, we offered to send full replacement copper beech trees straight away at no cost, while also allowing you to keep the original green beech trees free of charge. We also explained that if replacements were not suitable, we would happily provide a full refund instead.

Unfortunately, neither option was acceptable to you, as you requested replacement trees, to keep the original trees, and a full refund all together, alongside threats of legal action and negative reviews towards our staff.

We are genuinely sorry this mistake happened. We are a family-run business and, like any business dealing with living plants and seasonal conditions, occasional human errors can happen — although thankfully they are very rare. What matters most to us is always trying to put things right quickly, fairly, and honestly for our customers.

We truly value every customer who supports our nursery, and we sincerely wish you all the very best for the future.

Order with Complete Confidence

My obsession with fruit trees knows no bounds and Direct Plants have never let me down. Everything I order turns up promptly and well-packaged, and only once has one of their trees failed to flourish in my garden - it was replaced quickly and without quibble. Honestly, I don't even bother looking at other suppliers nowadays.

Would not use direct plants again

Would not use direct plants again. The courier company (DXExpress) they use are shambolic. Even though they emailed me twice to say they were delivering that day. 2 days on the trot they told me it was dealt with and it wasn't. No delivery date given. Eventually got a delivery date, items turned up a day early but half the items were missing. Just given excuses when I got back in touch. The missing package did turn up the next day. You are unable to talk to anyone on the phone, chat box only. Unfortunately Direct plants can only be contacted through email. 1-3 days.
Never again. Beware.

We sincerely apologise for the delivery issues you encountered with the courier. We understand how frustrating it is to receive delivery notifications that are not fulfilled as promised, and then to experience part of your order arriving separately. While we are pleased that the missing package was delivered the following day, we appreciate that this inconvenience should not have occurred.

As a small family-run nursery, our team spends much of the day within the nursery preparing, packing and caring for plants to ensure orders leave in the best possible condition. For this reason, we operate a dedicated customer service email system rather than a telephone line, as this allows us to efficiently track enquiries, investigate issues and maintain a complete record of communications to help resolve matters as quickly as possible.

We would also like to clarify that DX Express does provide telephone support directly for delivery-related enquiries, and customers can contact them using their customer service number for updates regarding parcels in transit.

We are sorry that our service fell short of your expectations on this occasion and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Your feedback is valuable and helps us continue to improve both our service and communication.

Great customer service !

Bought some trees via Amazon , arrived well packed , had a slight hiccup with a couple regarding size but this was sorted quickly and satisfactorily by Direct Plants , I would use again !

Lovely pot grown plum tree

Lovely pot grown plum tree, excellent condition, reasonable price, very well packaged. Delivery was prompt from order to receipt.
Carrier (DX) delivered on time and had taken care to read the instructions (keep upright). Delivered intact no damage.
Well pleased.

Lady in red shrub

My wife bought me a shrub for my Birthday She ordered it on the Tuesday and arrived on the Friday It was well packed although a couple of bits where broken of as you would expect when travelling in a van I would highly recommend this company one the prices are fair and delivery is unbelievable and don't overdo charge on the postage

A great buying experience from start to…

A great buying experience from start to finish. Communication was good throughout and we knew exactly when our trees were arriving. This is the 2nd order from Direct plants and certainly won’t be our last. The trees arrived very healthy and packaged well. The trees we bought last year are doing fantastic and this encouraged us to return to buy more but a different kind of tree. The information on the web is great as we needed trees that were suitable for large pots and the information was there for us. Great company.

Lovely tall fully flowering plant

Lovely plant. Tall, fully flowering and it's ready to plant out after a settling into the garden period. It was infested with white fly but a quick spray seems to have settled the problem. Packaged well for safe delivery and reasonable price🪻✨️😊
