Thank you. I owe you a bigger thank-you than you owe me.

You first wrote 18 months after buying from us. Your message opened with kind words before it got to the problem: every game had suddenly stopped launching. You did every step I sent, followed the video, and tried ideas of your own. Nothing worked, so we sent you a new card.

The new card wouldn't boot on your Pi 5. That one is on us, and I'm sorry. You told me over the weekend, and still wished me a good one.

I'd already offered another card, but you asked first if you could redo this one yourself. It was a smart idea. I sent the official Pi 5 boot files from the Batocera project, and you rebuilt the card. Fifty-five minutes after you asked, you texted me: "We're back in business."

You did the hard part. Thank you for sticking with us through two cards, for being kind the whole way, and for writing this.

I'm glad the nostalgia is flowing in your household again. If anything acts up, you know where to find me.

David — the moment from our thread I remember best is you asking whether the Ultimate Fighting Board I sell would help your setup, and me telling you to skip it. Your arcade already had a working encoder; a second one wouldn’t have fixed anything that was actually bothering you. You heard that honestly, which is rarer than it should be.

What was bothering you was games running slowly, and that’s a settings problem, not a hardware one. I walked you through driver and resolution tweaks instead, and the thread trailed off from there — which usually means it worked. Hearing a month later that it did, in a review I didn’t ask for, is the best signal I get.

Every order through here is me, start to finish — packing the card, writing the SMS, pulling the thread back up when a customer circles back. Reviews like yours are what keep that model honest; the whole premise is that I sell you what you need and talk you past what you don’t.

Jamie — the part that stayed with us from your order wasn't the trip to the post office to pick the card back up. It was that the whole thing was for your grandkids and the gun games on the Dolphin Bar. That's what made the second round worth doing, and we're glad the card ended up where it belongs. You were patient and good-humoured through all of it, which made our side easy. There's no rush on anything else — whenever you fancy coming back we'll be here, and no question is ever a bother. Give the grandkids a proper go when the Wiimotes come out.

Thank you for the review and for coming back for a second card — that means a lot.

I also want to be upfront: the card getting corrupted from moving it between the Pi and PC is actually a really common pitfall, and it's something we should do a better job of warning people about upfront. The Pi's ext4 partition isn't natively readable on Windows, and the back-and-forth can trip up the file system in ways that aren't always recoverable. That's on us to document better, not on you to figure out.

For your new card, a quick tip that'll save you from the same issue: if you ever want to back up your saves or ROMs, the safest way is to do it over the network instead of pulling the card out. Connect your Pi to WiFi, grab the IP from Main Menu > Network Settings, and then from your PC just type \192.168.x.x into File Explorer (username: root, password: linux). You can copy saves back and forth all day without ever touching the card.

I don't even know where to start — this review genuinely made my day. Thank you.

When you say "my entire childhood is in this thing" — that's exactly why I built it. That's the whole point. Not the specs, not the game count, not the hardware. It's about sitting down, firing up Timesplitters 2 or Wario World, and being 12 years old again for a couple hours. The fact that you're playing it every day and still discovering new favorites months later — that tells me the 4TB was the right call for you.

And I'll be honest — I remember our back-and-forth about the GameCube Vulkan fix. That one is tricky because Batocera's default settings don't always play nice with GameCube out of the box, and most people would've just given up and assumed "those games don't work." You didn't. You asked, we figured it out together, and now they all run. That's the kind of thing that makes this work worth doing.

You nailed it when you said Batocera is "sometimes hard to learn if you're not computer smart" — it really is, and I know that's a barrier for a lot of people. That's exactly why I'm here. The whole idea is that you shouldn't need to be a Linux engineer to enjoy the games you grew up with. If I can bridge that gap with a couple of text messages, then I've done my job.
