What happened to my wife at Halfords Hawley (Warrington) is nothing short of disgraceful.

After returning from a 3‑week holiday, she realised the MOT had expired by a few days. She immediately booked the earliest available MOT slot — 10am at this branch. She arrived on time, handed the keys over, and the receptionist accepted the car without issue. He suggested she went for a walk around the retail park, and would call her when the MOT was complete.

She was called after approx one hour and told her they couldn’t MOT the car. Why? Because the engine was “too dirty.” and it required a SERVICE before a MOT could take place.. Under pressure she agreed to the service.

Yes, you read that right — apparently a bit of dust and normal engine grime now magically prevents an MOT.

He then tried to scare her with nonsense about “oil around the engine,” “soot,” and even told her she needed to “drive at high revs to clear the DPF.” even though the DPF filter was not blocked. The advice was ridiculous.

This is classic upselling and intimidation, preying on someone who walked in alone. Absolutely shameful behaviour.
Fortunately I called to see what was happening as she was away for a few hours and told her to cancel the service and we will book it in some where else
THIS VEHICLE WAS BOOK IN AT 10AM FOR A MOT !!
Booked the car in the following morning at a real garage , and guess what ?
MOT PASSED. ZERO advisories. I did tell the mechanic at the MOT station, his reply was, not surprised....
One‑owner, low‑mileage Mercedes. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

So what exactly was Halfords trying to pull?
Because it certainly wasn’t an honest MOT.

This branch is either completely incompetent or deliberately taking advantage of customers — especially women who come in alone. Either way, it’s unacceptable.

KEEP AWAY.
There are real garages out there that won’t treat you like a walking wallet !!

Brought a new agm uncharged battery

Brought a new agm battery. Installed it myself. It was nearly completely uncharged. Took 10 hours on a quility charge to bring it back. No problem after that. Why do they charge £50 for installing a battery. Took me 10 minutes, if you are unsure enty of vidios on You Tube.

we arrived at Halford in Raleigh Wier

we arrived at Halford in Raleigh Wier, the staff where very helpful. James check what car battery we need and within half an hour we had a new one fitted. He explained that we had a 5 year warranty and that engine faults may come up after fitting our battery. If we had any issue he said to come back. all the staff where polite and helpful that we met. James was very quick at his work and helpful. would recommend this branch

What a pointless waste of time

What a pointless waste of time, nobody answers the phones, the website doesn't work and the companies attitude to customers is abysmal. How are they still trading. I expect I might get a response from them saying please try phoning us or go online and tell us what the problem is about it, but life is way too short for that.

Bought a expensive bike for my son's…

Bought a expensive bike for my son's birthday, paid to have it built and the gears do not work correctly! Now I am left with a bike that does not work as I am unable to get it back to the store without extra hassle and costs incurred to me - they will not come to collect it or send someone round - it is not my fault or error it is theirs. More time wasted on phones / emails so will contact ombudsman as it is brand new & not working!!!

DO NOT GO FOR AN MOT!!!!!!!!!

Booked my car in for an MOT. HUGE MISTAKE!!!! Was told by a giggling idiot that the car had failed due to a broken coil spring and that they couldn’t fix it! I called my regular garage who looked up the MOT certificate which read it was corroded not broken and any other MOT centre would have passed it with an advisory to get fixed. Biggest waste of time and money. Would never go back or recommend!!

Ordered tool chest for store pick was give a delivery date no contact on that date contacted customer services twice was told maybe if you pop to store in the Friday or Saturday it may be there absolutely abysmal service also having to wait to cancel order will never use Halfords again

mot and service

took my car this morning 28/2/26, 12miles away to Northallerton for service and mot,got there at o8.20 as instructed,was told my service would be done straight away but my mot wasn't until 1500hrs,she said that was the time i booked it for,I hadn't,and why would I book the service and mot 9 hrs apart,obviously had to cancel as what was I supposed to do,wait in the waiting room?? what a waste of my time,very disappointed 😞

Portsmouth Halfords

Portsmouth Halfords! Absolutely disgraceful customer service from Halfords. Booked for a reversing camera fitting which they stated could be fit to my car only to look at the car and say we can't do it. Wasted a day off. Then told me it's been refunded which it has not. Then told me on the phone I would get it in 5 days then told me they have spoken to the store and now would be another 10 working days. This is Halfords withholding my money for a month for a product they could never have fitted! Portsmouth Halfords avoid!

Shocking customer service.

Took my vehicle in for a new battery. 5 weeks and 5 days later got it back...without a new battery. It waited outside the shop for 4 and a half weeks before it was taken to a garage for diagnostic. Diagnosed with minor issue which any decent mechanic would have spotted straight away. Customer service shocking. NEVER called us back despite numerous promises to do so. Hire car took a week to arrive. No communication between hire car company and customer services. Didnt seem at all bothered that our vehicle was outside their store for over 4 weeks with nothing happening. Do not let them near your vehicle.

Poor Customer Service

Phoned the garage for an update on my car at 17:24 since they close at 18:00. The guy said “yeh we’re still working on the servicing it should be ready by 18:00. “

I phone again at 17.50 to say I’m running late will be there in 15mins. He replied “Well we’re closing at 6 so …” I said “Sorry but I had to phone you for an update on my car which wasn’t even ready at the time of my call. I will be there by 18:05, so if you can pls just wait out for me.” He replies “I’m going to have to, don’t I?” And hangs up. Rude! I was fuming.

The customer service is ATROCIOUS! Terrible on all counts. When I eventually got there at 18:03. I had to wait 10mins in reception. So his attitude over the phone for having to wait just 5mins wasn’t even warranted. Plus I was the one who called for an update! If you’re closing at 18:00 and a car is still in the process of getting serviced you phone the customer at least an hour before closing time so that they’re aware and make the time to sort out their personal commitments.

I had two new Halford headlight bulbs…

I had two new Halford headlight bulbs fitted at Bury branch. When it was dark I tested them, one beam pointed to the pavement, the other to the other side of the road! I called a local garage and they said the bulbs had been ‘forced in’ and were not seated properly. That cost me an extra £20 to rectify!

VW tiguan for MOT. Utter Crap technicians

VW tiguan for MOT. The one who was doing MOT said that they cannot test emmission as their system does not support it. They have wasted my time for 3 weeks and should have informed me after booking that they cannot get MOT done, but no, On MOT date during getting it done they knew that their system does not support it. MOT at halfords is rubbish. Pls be careful before getting MOT booked at Halfords. Mechanics at MOT should have known about their systems if it supports or not and this should be highlighted before booking one's car for MOT. Utter rubbish technicians at Watford Halfords.

RUBBISH CUSTOMER SERVICE

I have a car battery with a 4 year guarantee that after 14 months is dead and wopuldn't take a charge. I took it to the store and they tested it and said it was fine I needed to charge it correctly. I tried over 48 hours as per instruction and it remains dead. Their customer services say I have to now take it to the store for them to test it. And then return to the store when they have the test results. They clearly believe their customes ARE STUPID.

Ordered online paid for delivery one item delivered to me the over item says t at the shop for pickup which makes no sense I've spoken to halfords colleagues on the phone and I haven't got anywhere. now I've asked for my money back and only part payment 🙃 wot a shambles from HALFORDS . POOR SERVICE

I picked up a few things from the…

I picked up a few things from the Colchester Halfords and after paying with google pay, checked my receipt.I noticed that I was charged £2 more than the rack price for a window wash concentrate. The staff member told me that I had picked the lemon fragrance which cost more than the berry. I could not be fussed which smell my screen wash is and after looking at the shelves, she agreed that the higher price is not indicated. I agreed to take the "cheaper fragrance"and asked for the difference to be refunded. At this point I was told Halfords can't refund to google pay, even though the linked card is the same one they had just taken payment from. I was offered a gift card but refused and escalated to the manager. She "attempted" a refund which did not go through and told me she could not tell if it was the system or my card that was at fault. I pointed out that they had just taken a payment from my liked card, so no way in which the issue is with me. I was then offered a cash refund which I accepted. What a malarkey!

Not there when you need them

I purchased a Michelin Primacy 4 tyre for my Hynundai Kona with mobile fitting on Thursday. It was due to be fitted on Saturday morning. I chose Halfords because other providers couldn't do it until Tuesday.

They call me on Saturday morning to tell me that the tyre is out of stock and therefore the fitting cant happen today. How did they not know that on Thursday when I ordered instead of wasting my time. Why didn't The they call me on Friday? The website didn't give any suggestion it could be out of stock. Instead they call me at the exact time im expecting my tyre to be replaced to say its not coming.

What is more is that I was then offered different tyres being told that because it was cheaper, that would be a good deal for me. The advisor did not seem to understand that perhaps I chose a premium tyre on purpose because I was looking for certain qualities. Not least of which being suitable and most recommended for my Kona EV performance. The tyre that was suggested to me wasnt even a tyre grade fit for EVs. Im surprised that Halfords customer service staff dont have this basic knowledge.

I chose mobile fitting because I had a flat tyre. Now because of Halfords time wasting, I now have to miss a further 4 days of being able to do my job. If I had gone with another company, it would have only been 2.

For the record no apology was given either. Very disappointing service. I personally wont make that mistake again. I would recommend sorting your purchasing procedure out to reflect actual stock levels so this doesnt disrupt other customers lives like it has mine.

Stay clear away from Halfords

This company's employees and systems are incredibly incompetent as not only did an employee fit a tyre wrong causing a flat in mere days, then having to go through there support system which is extremely slow, having then booked another mobile fitter, they come out to check the condition of the tyre and taking it away stating I would get another booking the next day for the tyre to be fitted which I did ask why didn't he bring a tyre to fit as they knew the previous tyre was split but I was told there was nothing he could do. little did I know That fitter then put the wrong tyre into the system for the re-booking, resulting in yet another error as the another tyre fitter the next day turns up with the incorrect tyre and stating the systems are down so I would have to chase up the situation myself with there support again and book yet ANOTHER mobile fitter to come out and fit the right tyre this time, I have lost multiple days of work due to Halfords system error and employee errors

Took my car to their Brownhills branch…

Took my car to their Brownhills branch for a DPF clean I was told they couldn’t do it as the car was showing faults I said ok, got there to be told we’ve taken £50 off your credit card because do a diagnostic before we do a DPF clean I said you never told me anything about diagnostics he said well it’s part of the job, I said don’t you think you should have informed me if this before I left it with you because if you had I’d have driven away, I wish I’d looked at Tripadvisor for their reviews because if I had I wouldn’t have gone there in the first place, keep away!!!
