Lupine Piko 7 + headband heavyDuty
I needed a good and reliable headlamp for Adventure Race. I procured the model with long lasting battery for helmet mounting. The large battery does not fit on the headband mounting device. This was clear before procurement.
The actual lamp is of good quality and easy to operate.
The details is however not considered.
When you procure such a expensive lamp I expect all details to be considered. The Head band is also expensive.
Mounting of battery on helmet is not easy and flexible it looks easy on the instruction but takes to long and a mounting device is prefeable.
mounting and dismounting the lamp from the front is not easy. Especially difficult with cold fingers after a night on the water.
When running the lamp keeps losing the position and lights goes to my feeds insted of ahead. Constant adjustment is needed.
The IP rating is only when cables are firmly attached. Having the battery in a backpack that gets water during a race will discharge the battery. Simple protection of connections can solve this.
The connection is also of bad quality and with moist affection the green wanders appears.
If you are to use the product only for one activity below 4h it can work perfectly but it is not for multisport activities were you need to be fast in transaction zones.
i have nothing but great things to say…
i have nothing but great things to say about lupine
yes there expensive but the quality is there with fantastic after sales service when i had a problem with water ingress on an SL Af
the problem was sorted swiftly
i would have no issues recommending the company and there products all 3 of my lights are first class
Bad after sale customer service
I've got their piko tl torch.
It needed repairing, so I sent it in and they replaced the battery and electronics, which I paid for.
Three weeks later the torch was not working, and I resent it to them. They repaired it.
Six months later, it has stopped working again. So I emailed them. They did not reply. Two weeks later I emailed them a second time. No reply again.
The Best Headlight at a Price
I bought the Lupine Betty R 14 with 20 aH battery, remote, charger and bar mount. The quality of all these items is higher than any other bike lights I have previously bought. The metal used to construct the light and mount feels exceptionally robust. Even the matte look & feel of the cables is beyond the cheap fare you will get with other lights.
The bar mount is particularly pleasing, as it allows you to mount the light directly in front of the handles bars; opposed to on top of them, which is where my previous lights have been mounted. The mount also allows you to position the light up and down, which some other lights do not offer.
The remote is a great innovation. If you have the light on full, or even half power, they are dazzling to anyone coming towards you. So you should turn them to the lowest setting. If you are bombing down hills at 30-40 mph at night, it is not the safest thing in the world to release a handlebar and move your hand to change the light intensity. However, the Lupine remote can be mounted anywhere. I have mounted mine on my handlebars close to the gear and break shifters. So I can change gears, break and change light intensity without having to move my hand.
The 20 aH bottle battery is worth buying. I've done several hours, probably about 6, of riding since buying the battery and it still does not need charging. That is 6 hours of varying light intensity. I generally only have full beam on for downhill and certain parts of town where I want to be particularly visible.
The only disappointment I have with the purchase is the light itself - it is not as bright as I thought it would be. On the site there is a photo of the light on full in a forest, which provides spectacular light over a huge distance. It could be that the location was perfect to show the light at its best. The location you are in makes a big difference to how powerful the beam looks. If you are in a wide open space, it does not look so spectacular; if you are in a very enclosed space the light does not seem to be able to penetrate as far as you think it might. The light appears most powerful in a relatively closed area, i.e. a wide road with trees at either side.
With that said, it is considerably, but not as good as I thought it would be, better than the previous set-up I had of a 1600 real lumen Fluxient and a 850 real lumen Magicshine. I use lights to ride out into the country at night and the old two were adequate, but not great at highlighting potholes. The Lupine is better with its longer and brighter beam.
The only real negative I have is quite minor. That is the unit heats up significantly if you are not moving or moving slowly. This probably won't be an issue, though I thought I would mention it for anyone who might want to use the light for walking, which I am not sure if it would be appropriate for because of the heat issue.
In total I spent about £600 on items from Lupine. You could consider this over-priced; you may want the same power from lower quality products. With Lupine you are paying for everything at a high quality and I'd imagine most of the items are hand-made in small numbers. If you opt for a smaller battery, you can probably get everything you need for about £500. Also worth mentioning is I bought an extension cable for the bottle battery, which you don't actually need if you are mounting it in the standard place for bottles.
As of writing, the Lupine Betty R 14 is the most powerful front-lamp on the market, tested at over 4,700 real lumens. There is only one more powerful light that is mounted on the helmet at about 6,000 real lumens, which is also pricey. If £500-600 is too much for you, I'd recommend getting two Fluxient 3000 lumen rated lamps, which you can get for £100-130 w/ a 8.8 aH battery, which has no strap. These actually only provide 1,600 real lumens and the output is a yellowish-halogen-style light as opposed to the piercing white LED light of Lupine or Magicshine, which is much better for night rides. However, if you want something relativity cheap and powerful, I'd recommend that. But, if you are like me and just want the best, just buy the Lupine now as you will only end up wanting it later.
The customer service of Lupine is good. I sent a few emails to them, which were promptly and professionally replied to, before making an order.
