Our company originally started with Zenefits, which was later acquired by TriNet. Unfortunately, the other reviews here are spot on. After the transition to TriNet, service levels declined significantly. It routinely takes months—no exaggeration, months—to receive a response to support emails. And when they finally do follow up, the lack of a proper ticketing system makes it nearly impossible to remember which issue they’re referring to.
We ultimately decided to switch to another payroll provider after TriNet attempted to significantly increase our annual costs.

Like a micromanaging gatekeeping boss who pays pennies
I've got to agree with what everyone else is saying. TriNet is terrible. Every single thing you need to do requires a support ticket. Their fees are INSANELY expensive compared to virtually any other PEO. Their processing platform is not keeping up with the times and is outdated. Their reports are minimal at best and, again, many are blocked and you need a support ticket. Their fees go up every year, they just fired their CFO last year, and you're going to get hit with random "innovation fees" throughout the year that have no explanation. They control your pay dates and make it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to move payroll processing dates.. for example they'll demand payroll be due on the final day of a pay period, despite having hourly employees who have barely started the day, and it's due by 10am. Any request to change that payroll processing date (because, you know, that's kind of illegal), is met with... "oh, sorry, the team says a week isn't enough advance notice". And no matter how many times you remind them HEY, we have HOURLY EMPLOYEES, we need payroll to be processed AFTER the pay period ENDS, they will continue to schedule and demand it that way... but only sometimes!!!... and it's not relevant to any holidays or weekends etc. It's just random. Sooo many road blocks, a VERY outdated processing system, very unfriendly user interface, they gatekeep nearly every permission in the entire system, and you don't have full access to your own company or employee data. The staff will pretty much always be passive aggressive or annoyed with your requests, and the layout is horrible. They're like the boss that nobody likes because they micromanage everything and don't give any of their staff a single ounce of autonomy, then get mad when the turnover rate is sky high.

Misrepresentation Followed by Withheld W‑2 Forms
We used TriNet for approximately one month in 2025. During onboarding, the services and capabilities represented to us were inconsistent with what was subsequently delivered, which led us to terminate them.
On February 1st, when it became clear that none of our employees had received their legally required 2025 Form W‑2s, we contacted TriNet for assistance. As of today, TriNet has continued to provide inconsistent explanations and has failed to furnish the W‑2 forms as mandated under federal law.
TriNet maintains that the documents are “available online,” yet they refuse to reinstate or activate individual employee access to the portal, making it impossible for our team to obtain their IRS‑required tax documents.
This failure has caused unnecessary delays and has hindered our employees’ ability to comply with federal filing deadlines.
Based on our experience, we strongly advise prospective clients to exercise caution and thoroughly verify TriNet’s claims and capabilities before entering into any agreement with them.

Archaic system that's behind the times
Archaic system that's behind the times. If you are an HR person thinking of Trinet, please skip and use a different system. We switched away from Trinet mid year, so I need to login one last time to get my W-2. It forces you to use a code, but the email does not arrive before the session expires, so I am effectively locked out of the system. I just want to download my W-2 and I can't login.

Awful experience with FSA Claims
Their FSA claims department will "blanket deny" *every* single claim you submit, no matter the documentation, no matter the medical necessity. They make interest off the money they refuse to release to you for reimbursement, essentially holding your money hostage. If your company is considering using this "benefits" provider, urge them to think otherwise. Absolutely horrible experience.

I called empower and spoke to a trinet employee and she had no idea what she was talking about. She didnt know it takes a couple days for 401k contributions to be updated on the Empower app after your paycheck is deposited

Non Accountable Company
I discussed an existing medical savings account with their customer service. The reason why I was talking with them in the first place was the did not process an expense despite receiving a receipt twice. I noticed their website had me with a balance. I did not think the funds were available, so I called customer service and the rep told me they were. When the expense was processed they denied the claim. In the end their response was, even if the website and our CSR is wrong, we will default to the plan. No offer to correct it, admit their mistake or anything. The last email they sent was rude. I will never, ever, deal with TriNet again and I will ask my company to get rid of them. I am not the first person to notice. They outsource all of their work. A collective bunch of nonperformance. If there was a zero star I would have selected it. To Tri-Net's reply. I offered many opportunities to work together. Frankly as a customer service manager there were things which could have been done to alleviate the situation. At the time I was out of work and what Tri-Net did was saddle me with a 600 bill I would have never incurred without their direction. The capper was the rude response at the end. As a note the company I was dealing with has moved on to another HR supplier. My suggestion is, if you make an error, own it, alleviate and do not revert to rules and regs when you or your rep makes a mistake.

Incorrect local tax filing. Never responded to my inquiry about it. Received a late notice for state unemployment compensation filing. These are very basic expectations.

Caution for business owners. You will lose your tax benefits
Lots promised but not delivered. On many things it seems great to get the insurance etc however, they were not clear how I would now be their employee so as an owner I lost tens of thousands for tax benefits. This was not clear or I would not have signed on.
