Overall great experience with wicked campers. Nice and easy booking and pick up / drop off. Our vehicle had everything you needed for off roading / camping. Highly recommend

Quality experience

Picked this van up in Sydney and drove up the east coast. Was a great experience and exactly what we needed. Would recommend to any people looking for a small quality van.

Perfect for adventuring

I had to push back my holiday, the ladies on the phone were helpful and quickly changed and confirmed my booking. We arrived to the depot after hours and the process to get the keys was simple and fast. The van itself is everything you need for a good adventure, will definitely be booking through wickedcampers again!

I was thrown off by the car yard at…

I was thrown off by the car yard at Hobart. A lot of wicked vans with doors off and looked like a scrap yard. The car steering had issues such as when I drove over 80 km/ph it would drift side to side which scared me. I called the company to get someone to come have a look and I was told ‘it’s just the wind’ and no one came to look at the van. The bed was super uncomfortable and graffiti inside the van. Seems like the bond money doesn’t get used for fixing the cars. The paint job was very scratched up and a few dings in the car. The carpet under the driver seat was all torn up. I ended up leaving the van at a friends place and jumping in with a friend to feel safer.

One way rental from Sydney to Brisbane

One way rental from Sydney to Brisbane! Van did the job for what we needed. Less space in the van than expected but we were able to sleep fine. If you want comfort, pay extra and get a bigger van - it’s worth it. Staff were very helpful throughout the trip!!

Cool scooby doo van

Cool scooby doo van, did the job. First van broke down 2mins down the road. Got a replacement van friendly staff at the Depot (25 Erskine rd, Caringbah, NSW). Unfortunately picked up with no fuel, or chairs minor inconveniences overall cool experience.

Sydney to Brisbane One Way

One way rental Sydney to Brisbane after a flight was cancelled to Brisbane.

The car is as advertised, don't expect the type of vehicle you'd get from Avis or Enterprise, they've done some time.

Pickup and dropoff was very quick and easy, and I do really like their pre-check in to make the pick up as quick and seamless as possible.

WA van rental

When I arrived at the pickup location at the pick up time there was nobody there. I had to call the head office and wait until a mechanic showed up. The mechanic was super helpful getting me on my way.
The van itself worked fine, no issues.
They charged me an outback fee as well as a daily remote fee which I found somewhat redundant. Drop off was easy aside from being told I had to go find a dumpster to throw out the bedding that came with the van. All in all good experience.

Get your act together Wicked

I rented a D5 4x4 Adventure Camper for a week from the Darwin depot. The low spec van was never going to be comfortable, but it did everything that it was supposed to do and was in acceptable condition.

I accepted the extra charges levied for the 4x4 over the Johnny Feelgood because it comes with a solar panel to drive the fridge. A good decision, but at a huge cost:
The national park surcharge was $300 ($50 for a 2WD) at a time of year when only the sealed roads were open
Insurance was both more expensive and less comprehensive for the 4WD
The bond for the 4WD was $2000 compared to $500 for the 2WD

As expected, I returned the vehicle with more fuel and in better condition than when I picked it up, expecting the bond to be returned within a few days.

Two weeks later, I am still awaiting any correspondence relating to the return of the vehicle and there is no sign of my bond being returned. Wicked's T&Cs give them 7 - 30 days to return the bond. If the vehicle had been damaged, I can understand that it might take 30 days to assess, but for a vehicle returned in good order, there is no excuse for the delay. Having $2000 still not available on my credit card is limiting the funds available to enjoy the rest of my holiday. Thanks Wicked!

The only correspondence received from Wicked is repeated requests for feedback. If they were more ethical in the way that they handled my money, they might have got 4 stars, but under the circumstances they are lucky to get 2.

Get your act together Wicked. With a better attitude to administration, you could be running a good business.

Overall pretty good but some difficulty with comms

A few issues with picking up the camper van so make sure you have a contact number in advance if you’re picking up out of hours. Everything else was seamless and the camper was great. Also, the return process was nice and easy too. Better communication would have taken the rating up a bit.

You get what you pay for. Cheap & cheerful

You get what you pay for and thats certainly the truth with Wickedcampers. We enjoyed our time and knew when hiring the van we would be roughing it. We hired the Mystery machine 2 and it gave adults a right giggle when they saw us and kids were very excited when we drove past. We got a mattress topper because the mattress is very hard. There was no blinds on windows so we had to get coverings for them ourselves. There was no way to ventilate the van at night as we couldn't open the windows which made it very uncomfortable at times. But otherwise it did what we needed to do for over 3k kms. Bit clanky and old but we had fun.

We hired a campervan to drive from Perth to Exmouth

We hired a campervan to drive from Perth to Exmouth. We found the tents on the roof very convenient and the 4x4 allowed us to visit the Francois Perron national Park which is fabulous. Nevertheless, we got a flat battery and had to change it and the fridge didn’t work well neither and had to be changed too. But even with a new one, the fridge didn’t really work when we weren’t driving despite the solar panel.

Bed Bugs + uncooperativ customer service

We rented a camper from Wicked in December. When we went to pick it up, it was a different model. It had a manual transmission instead of an automatic, and instead of a refrigerator, there was only a cooler box. The vehicle was handed over to us by a mechanic, and there was no customer service available to discuss all of this. We needed a vehicle, so we took the camper, even though it wasn't what we had paid for. After the first night, which was also our first night in Australia, we woke up covered in bed bug bites. (Sidenote: We had bought new bedding because Wicked does not provide bedding. At that point, we understood why they don`t provide bedding.). We contacted Wicked, but they were very uncooperative and tried to convince us that the bites were from mosquitoes. At that point, we started looking for other people's experiences, and sure enough, we found many "bed bug reviews." Unfortunately, we hadn't looked at the reviews beforehand – our original car rental company had canceled on us at the last minute, and we were desperate. After a lot of back and forth, we were eventually provided with a replacement vehicle. The car was barely roadworthy and smelled of mold. We returned it before the end of our rental period because we didn’t feel safe driving it. Wicked did not offer any reimbursement for the fact that we had paid for a camper and received no adequate replacement, nor did they compensate us for returning the vehicle early or for the bed bug infestation (we had to wash all our things and get rid of everything which was not washable). The customer service was a disaster, continuously presenting it as if we should still be grateful for the old, moldy Toyota. Overall, it was a very bad experience. It was our honeymoon trip, and instead of simply enjoying it, we had to deal not only with the bed bugs we got from the wicked camper but also with the wicked customer service. I strongly advise against renting a vehicle from Wicked.

Uncomplicated and what you pay for

Uncomplicated, we had everything we needed. Of course no luxury, but considering the price it was totally fine.

It was al little embarrassing, driving around in a Scooby-doo van. Despite that we had no problems.

Outback experience

We have rented 4x4 Grip for our trip to Coober Pedy. We’ve been looking for a vehicle which can be taken to the destination and which will be able to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children preferably not sleeping on the ground. Grip does that with two roof top tents. The car itself was not the latest and greatest but everything we needed worked and it did a job. We have safely traveled ca 4k kms. Tents were comfortable enough. Folding out and in was quite quick and easy. Fridge in the back was working very well with solar panel. There was also enough space for our luggage. Overall we’ve spend a great time.

Overall good experience.

We rented two vehicles from Wicked Camper. The first was a 4WD camper for 5 with 2 pop up roof tents that we rented in Perth, WA on Dec. 1, 24 and drove all the way to Sydney and dropped it off on Jan. 12, 25. The second vehicle was a car in Hobart, TAS that we rented from Dec. 14, 24 to Jan. 2, 25.

Overall I would say that our experience was good.
Wicked is a low-cost outfit so you are not going to get tip top new vehicles, but they also rent them for less than its competitors. For example, the car we rented in Tasmania was an old Toyota Camry. It was old and cost less than other rental cars, but it worked just fine. The service at the rental shop in Hobart was excellent.

When we rented the 4WD camper in Perth, we found the service to be very good. They offered to give us extra things, such as a spare diesel can. The camper that they gave us had a funny sound in the engine that started once we drove away. We took the camper back and they gave us a second similar camper that was ready to go without any problem.

About 2 days in to the trip when we got to Kalgoorlie was realized that the fridge was not working. There was no current coming from the battery. We called the Wicked Camper helpline and found them to be very helpful. We discussed the problem and the Wicked staff quickly found us battery shop to go to in order to buy a new replacement battery.

Wicked Camper paid for the new battery so that we did not have to. After a few more days, the fridge again stopped working because the battery was dead again. We talked to the Wicked helpline. They were very good at patching us through to the man who had designed the electrical system that charge the battery. He did a good job of trying to help us, but it was hard to fix the problem over a cell phone.

When then went to an electrical repair shop in Shark Bay and the person there was able to fix the problem by finding a broken connection. We paid for the work and Wicked reimbursed us with no problem.

Later after about 5 weeks of driving, the camper would not start when we were near Melbourne. We called Wicked Camper and said it would not start. They arranged to have a new camper for us in Melbourne. We had our camper towed to Melbourne where we were given a new camper. They reimbursed us quickly for the cost of the towing.

So yes we had some problems, but Wicked did a prompt job of trying to help us. The camper in general was equipped simply, but well.

There were several comments made in other reviews below about the bond not being returned in time. We did not have this experience. Our full bond was returned within a month.

One of the comments below stated that they were charged $700 for driving on beach. When the website says one can go anywhere. I support this comment because the website does say you can go anywhere. However, if you read the terms and conditions, you can't drive on a beach. I was told of this limitation when I rented the 4WD so I was not surprised by it.

However, I think that this is a real mistake that Wicked Camper is making. I can understand Wicked not wanting people to drive long distances down a beach where there might be salt water. However, there should be no issue driving over sand to get to a beach to camp because that is where many of the nice campsites are.

Rough and ready but it did the job!

We rented a Toyota Noah from WickedCampers Auckland for a month from mid-December 2024. Overall, it served the purpose for us but it wasn’t the most comfortable experience - I’d recommend it to adventurous travellers wanting to live simply.

The pros: the prices are much cheaper than other rental companies, the van was self-contained (meaning we could access all the beautiful freedom camping spots) and we didn’t have any major mechanical failures. It drove well, had a modern audio system and was really easy to park due to the size. It had everything we needed for a month (other than bedding which we bought cheaply in a supermarket).

The cons: the van was very small (it was actually more like a large car), which was fine on sunny days but too small on rainy days where we needed to sit inside for an evening. There were a few signs of age too, for example: the brake fluid ran out three times in a month, the back left door wouldn’t open and the back right window wouldn’t open. It wasn’t the most comfortable for sleeping - the company provided thin long cushions like you would get in a sun lounger (we bought a mattress topper form a bed shop in the end), and there were no curtains.

They completely ruined my traveling experience in Australia!

Stay away from Campervanvillage and Wickedcampers!



They managed to totally ruin my traveling experience in Australia. And seem to go through lengths to further upset and bully already dissatisfied customers.



Borderline criminal or at the least just very incompetent.



First of all they go through great lengths to try and keep as much of your prepaid bond money as they can. Hiding behind their small print which they will say of course is all transparant on their website. But nobody will explain anything about it during the pickup of your van, that is how transparent they are.



I tried to find the silver lining but they managed to push the boundaries of my patience and understanding.



You can find all the details below and form your own opinion:



- (disappointing)

- I payed 2500 dollars extra compared to my friend, same company, same rental period (22 days), because I chose the 4x4 D5 adventure van. It was nearly identical to hers with the only difference mine was 4x4 but fitted with standard tires and not at all fit for offroad driving if I would have to assess. So I would stay away from this very overpriced option, which seems to me more to be a marketing stunt than a serious consideration for offroad driving

- Be aware about the deductible amount whenever there is damage. With the same insurance my friend had a bond of 500 dollars and a risk of 2000 for single vehicle incidents (hitting a roo for example). But since with my nearly identical vehicle, since classified as a 4x4, my risk with the same insurance was 2000 dollars bond and 5000 dollars risk when having a single vehicle incident (yes, that is on top of the 2500 dollars I had payed extra for the adventure van) (read/study all details on their policy here before you book: campervanvillage .com/policies

- The engine failed (overheated engine) 4 times during the trip seriously limiting the speed and rpm capacity of the car (no compensation or even interest in these issues from either campervanvillage or wickedcampers

- Be alert you pay 55 cents extra per kilometer you overrun the standard km’s. My gage was broken so I had a unwanted surprise at the end of an additional 900 dollars. Bringing the full rental price to 6000 dollars for a 22 day rental period. In my opinion extremely overpriced for an old and very basic campervan.

- Somewhere in the small print is written that beach driving isn’t allowed. So a 50 meter drive on a hard sand beach which I did cost me 600 dollars. To so called: clean the undercarriage. Total nonsense. Total of the rental has become 6600 dollars now

- Website info says the car will manage 12 KM per Liter. In real life: if you manage to stay below 2000 rpm while frustrating all the other traffic around you or only drive highway kilometers you’ll get 10 KM per Liter. Normal driving behavior will most likely give you 8 or 9 KM per Liter at best though

- Be aware the van requires Unleaded Fuel 95/98, next to the fact it is harder to find in more remote areas expect to pay 10-15% more for your fuel. Together with the range it adds up quickly I experienced

- Kilometer gage was broken, stuck on 44779 (If I would need to guess I’d say it is more likely the car has done around 200/300k kilometers)

- Water handpump system (of the kitchen) doesn’t really work comfortably, much force needed for some drops of water. You’re better off with a separate jerrycan with a tab on the bottom. The van I got was delivered with a broken 10 liter jerrycan, I had to find a replacement myself

- No on board navigation, CarPlay or phone mount in the car. You’ll need to be creative in order to (safely) navigate

- No explanation about the functionality of the car at pickup other than; that’s your fridge. The person at pickup was actually quite rude and unwelcoming. My friend had the exactly same experience
- The added bedding option I don’t recommend. Everything’s synthetic and pillows are flat. You might pay a bit more but getting some cotton sheets yourself will give you much more comfort

- The ‘sunpowered’ shower I also cannot recommend. One of the online videos shows a shower head attached to the van. The thing they gave me was a black 20L waterbag with a hose and spray head. You can warm the water in the sun, but need to put it up high above your head to be able to use it (it works with gravity). I found it unusable to say the least

- This might be nitpicking for some people but the sound of the fridge is quite audible and the little motor will run every 15 minutes or so. (Also while sleeping ;))
- The car didn’t seem to have two separate batteries. The day that my fridge died (due to a lack of sun power, needless to say my food was ruined also) the car wouldn’t start anymore and needed to be jumpstarted

WICKED CAMPER is an extremely unprofessional rental company.

We rented a vehicle that was supposed to give us the autonomy of travelling and sleeping wherever we want, but from the first day we realised the fridge, light and pressure water (to shower) were not working. We contacted the number that was given to us, but struggled to get answers from them, and ended up changing our plans, which was most costly for us, as we were not given any solution.

When we gave the car back, the lady from the front desk checked everything and agreed that things were not working, she gave us an email address to contact. It has been 3 months now that we brought the car back, they told me twice they would get back to me asap, but still nothing.

Moreover, they took $700 from our bond, saying we were not allowed to drive in the beach whereas the car’s description on the website says we can go everywhere we want + the T&Cs are not available on the mobile version of their website (which is where I was looking as I don’t have a laptop).

I strongly advise against renting from them! They have a really poor customer service and should look at improving it.

Thanks for your feedback. Beach driving is not permitted in our vehicles and a breach of the terms and conditions that are signed during the online check in. As salt leads to a quick deterioration of vehicles a major inspection and deep clean is required after beach driving and $700 were retained of the bond to cover the corresponding cost.
