Dissapointing experience with FreeAgent, doesn't automate VAT returns (costed me money for late repayment) and doesn't have a two way integrate with Hubspot two way fully as suggested,

I've found it a very short learning curve to use and very straightforward to keep on top of our club accounts. FreeAgent does what it says on the tin.

My question was answered quickly and clearly.

I've been using FreeAgent for a number of years now and would highly recommend their software. It's so easy to use, a lot of my bookkeeping is now done automatically and at year end my accountant deals with everything within my profile as it's all stored in one place. Found it much easier to use than Quickbooks. Also you can get it free of charge with RBS or Mettle account. I've also used the customer service team a few times and the response is really quick.

Polite and helpfull support. Understood the problem and kept me updated until the issue was resolved.

Phenomenal customer service experience!

We recently had an issue with our old accountant after clearing, not responding to requests to submit a VAT return for a period we were being covered in, and saying she would 'get round' to removing herself from our Free Agent. This was blocking us from submitting ourselves, and left us at risk of filing late and potentially facing a penalty.

Luckily, Lee-Ann, the Senior Billing and Bank Feeds Specialist, was incredibly helpful! I first spoke with her on Thursday the 2nd of April, and despite it being the bank holiday weekend, she resolved the issue on Monday the 6th (bank holiday Monday) after I forwarded over an email from our previous accountant saying they were refusing to act for us.

Thanks to Lee-Anne we were able to submit the return on time, and avoid the risk of any penalties as a result of our accountants lack of professionalism.

Used for years and really great. Now they support cash accounting thats fab too although has taken such a long time. So helpful everything can link to your bank, makes self employment and doing your own accounts so much easier.

We use Freeagent for my son's Taxi business. We are Vat Registered and find the systems as well as the professional advice we get just ideal for our business.
Would have no hesitation in recommending the system.

Easy to sign up and they don't leave you hanging. They follow up with very helpful emails and are on the end of a phone if needed.

Highly recommend FreeAgent

This year I decided to try moving from Xero to FreeAgent, mainly to save money. One clear advantage is that, if you have a business bank account with NatWest, you can get FreeAgent for free, which makes it very attractive at first.

Unfortunately, after spending two days trying to switch, I found a few major limitations that made it unsuitable for my business.

The biggest issue is that FreeAgent does not allow liability accounts to be used in invoice lines. As far as I could see, invoice items can only be posted to sales or revenue accounts. For me, this is a serious problem. I run a tour agency, and my invoices often include pass-through costs such as guide fees, transport, tickets, alongside my own commission. FreeAgent treats all of these as income, which means they would effectively increase taxable revenue. That simply does not work for this type of business model.

To me, this feels like a very basic function. It is the equivalent of having an Uber app without being able to set a pick-up point. It seems like something that should be simple to fix, yet it creates a major limitation in practice.

The second big drawback is pensions. In Xero, I use NEST, and the payroll integration is straightforward, with data transferring automatically. In FreeAgent, I could not find a proper equivalent. They appear to mention NOW: Pensions, but that does not help if you want to work with another mainstream provider. In practice, this means pension data may need to be handled manually every month, which adds unnecessary admin.

There are also smaller issues. For example, I did not like the lack of proper postcode-based address lookup, and overall the system feels a bit too basic in places.

FreeAgent may still be perfectly fine for some small businesses with simple needs, especially given the free NatWest access. But if your business requires proper handling of liability accounts in invoices or smooth pension integration, it may not be the right choice.

I am leaving this review mainly to save others time. These limitations only became clear to me after I had already invested time in trying to move over.

Well the software isn't obvious, but we sorted out the issue on chat.

Ive used xero and quickbooks and this just looks better for a start. I use it with multi currency wise account. Picks stuff up pretty well. I have accountant and set aside a little time to reconcile transactions. So far so good tho would love it to handle multi currency stripe better. And have an email to send and collect receipts. But good for my small business needs.

We were an incredibly small business and needed an easy way to file our accounts and taxes. Free Agent helped us significantly. Hooked up our bank account, to import transactions easily, it helped with everything we needed to do for companies house and HMRC. As someone with very little accounting knowledge it made it very simple for me to get things done. It helped that our business was small, and that our income only came from only one place, but, either way it saved us a lot of time and money with accountants. I cant comment on what its like for larger companies, but for someone small, this was great.
