1 star is the lowest I can give unfortunately.
These are proper scammers, I've lost 4.8k!
They are uncontable now and their phone number has been disconnected.
I wish I had read these reviews first.
I have raised a case with action fraud.

Scammers of the elderly.

My 79 year old mother was scammed by these cowboys, not only did they take an initial sum, but they have taken 2x further unauthorised payments of £900 from her account which is down right outrageous. There's a special place in hell for these people. Disgusting theft from the elderly.

AFK letters are a scam

We were approached by AFK Letters in October 2022 regarding a refund on our solar panels. They confirmed we could claim back around £16,000. It sounded very legit so decided to use their services. And like everyone else, who left a comment about AFK we were led down the garden path. After about a year and a bit of hearing nothing, in February 2024, we finally got the email that everyone else seems to have received saying congratulations, we won your compensation claim. But before we recieve the money we had to pay them £3300 for the tax. The very next day without the permission they tried to take this from our credit card but fortunately for us, it was declined due to lack of credit. The sad thing is we never worried too much as we always thought if it was a scam, we could get our money back through a Section 75 claim! However be warned - we made our Section 75 claim and received a disappoining answer from our card provider Amex, that our claim have not been upheld.
This is the reason they gave - " Your transactions were completed through a third-party business (or aggregator), Stripe. It is our understanding that Stripe provides a service by acting as a mediator between the supplier of goods/services and the financial institution. This allows a business or an individual to accept payments without needing to enrol as a Merchant with a Merchant Acquirer (the financial institution, such as American Express, that manages a Merchant’s account to facilitate credit card payments - American Express considers that the use of Stripe breaks the link between the Creditor, the Debtor, and the Supplier, which in this instance is AFK Letters. This means that there is no clear contractual link between yourself (the Debtor), American Express (the Creditor) and AFK Letters (the Supplier). "
In my opinion the whole thing is a scam, even the banks are in with it because how is a section 75 meant to work if we had no idea that a third party company was involved? This allows the scammers to get away with daylight robbery!!

Three weeks later, a few calls later, phone call message is the same , with no reply to the messages you leave. Have we all been taken in by this firm, I wonder if they answer this message. I Believe that AFK Letters are a SCAM. Proof It isn't AFK Letters !!!!!!!!

SCAM!

As in all the previous reviews, I was caught out and paid £1440 in June 2023 up front because they were very plausible. I had paid for my solar panels from savings in 2012, not with a bank loan or credit card, and they knew all about the court case involving my installers, which lent credibility. My experience echoes everyone else, reassurance that my claim was valid despite not involving a bank, other than to faciliate the payment, the Ombudsman was working on it, then on 1st February they tried to take another £1440 from my bank, fortunately it was blocked, and when I queried this with AFK they said they were just checking to ensure my account was genuine and that I would receive my full compensation by the end of March. Yesterday they tried unsuccessfully to take £1440 again and when I tried to ring today, the phone number was no longer in use. The money I gave them 9 months ago was going towards a trip to Australia to see my sister, probably the last chance we will have, now I'm not sure it will ever happen. I thought I was pretty on the ball about scams, but clearly not. These people have no conscience!

Beware! Scam company.

This company appear to have scammed my elderly father. They convinced him to pay £600 up front for a ‘renewable energy refund package’. He has attempted to contact them nine times, but keeps being put through to their answering machine. He has left messages, but received no response. Last week they attempted to take £1,400 out of his bank account, but fortunately the bank stopped it. I have reported this to Action Fraud and have had to persue a section 75 claim through his bank.

I have been scammed too

I have fallen for this scam. I paid £2300 in June last year. 10% of £15000 for solar panels and 10% of £7000 for batteries. I have kept in contact with emails and phone calls. They reassured me everything was going smoothly. I was contacted by David Vincent in January to say there was a payout of 8 million for a group of us for compensation . He said it would be easier to pay the tax on the money before I received it. I was very sceptical but agreed and a link was sent to pay. I then noticed an OTP had come from Santander for a request from AFK for nearly £3000. This came when I was actually still in conversation with David Vincent. I sent an email as no one answered my call to ask what was going on. Rebecca said David would phone me back. Which he did. What a smooth talker! I asked him how he had my card number. He said he knew what 4 numbers the card ended in and I had told him I would use that card. He said it had been a mistake for him to request the payment from the bank and he wouldn't do it again. He reassured me it was OK to cover the tax. I phoned the bank and they had already blocked my cards and told me they thought it was a scam. I still wasn't sure so i emailed AFK to say I wasn't going to pay and they already had enough of my money to cover the tax. They agreed!
All went quiet. I had been keeping an eye on the trust pilot comments and had seen that the company had changed address and has a new Director. I decided to test them today. I said I had changed my mind and would now pay the tax to expediate the payout and could they resend the invoice. Within minutes they had sent a new invoice. They must have been rubbing their grubby little hands with glee! Suffice to say I am not paying it!. I have broken my cover and have sent them an email saying what scum they are. And have asked if they heard of BBC RIP off Britain!

No contact or replies from AFK Letters

I had an initial contact with AFK Letters and had several emails from them and the latest said I was getting £6000 but in the meantime they tried to take £1200 from my account, luckily there were not enough funds. I have written to them by registered mail, left messages on their answerphone but no replies. Today I tried their main line no at the message was that it was no longer in operation. Only the individual nos for Rebecca Hall and Jackie Howard appear to be still working. I think that as per other comments this appears to be a possible scam.

REPORT THESE THIEVES

Yes, we were scammed too - for 3 claims, totalling nearly £1,800 in the beginning.
They were very good at weaving their web of deciept, sending us drafts of 'bespoke letters' that they (supposedly) sent.

Weeks later...
Barclays couldn't find any trace of said letter and the lady there was confused as to why we contacting them.
I rang AFK to cancel, but was talked out of it, They said they would write
again, to the Ombudsmen, to force a decision. ?? I went along with it.
Really, they were just stringing me along.

The final whammy came 7th Feb 2024, From Rebecca Hall, The claim was successful !
A invoice for £4,500 to get it processed.
I wanted more proof - It didn't sound right. I rang them, left messages, emailed them, no reply.

It was so hard to believe,
Their company looked so genuine back in 2022...there were no bad reports. Everything looked legal and there was a rumour that some people had, had solar refunds.
I'd never heard of 'The rescue room scam', but, after reading all the reviews here on Truspilot. I now know I'm not going crazy..I've just 'been had'.
Thank you all, for taking the time and the trouble to voice your truthful opinions.

THESE UNSCRUPULOUS TRICKSTERS NEED REPORTING TO ACTION FRAUD ASAP

I tried calling them this week...the phone lines are now dead, but they do have a new address & director:

Fraud alert

Fraud alert! This company is a massive scam. They don’t even deserve 1 star. My credit card company, Barclaycard, have today alerted me that AFK Letters has recently attempted to deduct £1,200 from my account. Thankfully, Barclaycard suspected this to be fraudulent activity and upon my confirmation have rejected the transaction and are sending me a new card.
Some 20 months ago, I had the misfortune of being cold-call approached by this AFK Letters scamming company concerning my solar panels. I had lost money and I after I told them the facts and that I had already tried to fight this myself back in 2016, they assured me that I would definitely get my lost money back along with compensation via the Financial Ombudsman Service. I was sceptical at first, but they were very convincing and came across knowledgeable, so I stupidly parted with £980 up front for a couple of badly drafted letters that I could have written better myself. I had clearly misunderstood their role believing they were going to take the matter forward for me. Well in summary, I lost the case on the basis that it was time-barred, along with the £980 fee. Following this, I contacted AFK Letters a number of times and they have ignored all my emails and now their telephone line has been disconnected. They have disappeared with my initial fee and are now trying to extract more money from me and other client accounts they still have on record. Previously, I contacted Barclaycard about AFK misrepresenting facts and they refunded me only in part, as it was my word against AFKs (there was no contract or T&Cs), but after today’s alert I am again pursuing a full refund, as it is evident even more so that this is a scam. These AFK scumbags need to be severely punished and prosecuted. I am so angry at myself for having fallen for this!

I used this company

I used this company, who did get me a refund, but not all of the claim. They charged me a fee based on the total claim and said they would pay back part of the fee is the total was not achieved. I did not get the whole claim and tried to get back part of the fee, needless to say they didn’t pay it back. Now some 2 years later they have tried to take another sizeable fee out of my account. Their phone has been disconnected and fortunately the transaction was turned down by my bank. Beware, this has possibly turned in to a scam now.

AFK Letters Scam - A Victim Statement

In January 2023 I was contacted by AFK Letters claiming they could recover the full cost of two solar panel installations I'd had done in 2012. William Mason explained to me that they qualified because:

1. The installation companies were no longer in business and were unable to honour the guarantees they had offered as part of their contract.

2. It was recognised that high pressure mis-selling techniques had been widely used to sell installations of this type and funds had been allocated by the banks/credit-card companies used to make the payment transactions, to settle claims of this type.

He advised that the compensation figure would amount to a substantial proportion of the original cost, most likely a full settlement plus interest. I was assured that the fee paid to AFK was safely held in a secure client account and that it would be refunded in full in the event that the claim was unsuccessful. I was further assured that AFK would administer the whole process, but that I would need to provide supporting documentation relating to the installations as and when requested.

I questioned whether there was any basis for a complaint, as the returns I'd seen on both installations had fully repaid and I was happy that they represented a good investment. I was assured that this didn't matter and that the claim would still succeed because of the widespread mis-selling techniques that had been used to sell this type of installation at the time.

Presented with such a 'nothing to lose' proposition, I paid the requested £2,580.00 fee to AFK on 17/03/23, but apart from a couple of badly written draft letters, AFK appears to have done nothing. I complained about the poor standard of writing in the letters and the fact that the contents misrepresented what had actually happened. I did eventually receive amended drafts, but my details were still wrong and the statements regarding the way the panels were sold to me were still significantly incorrect.

I heard nothing more from AFK until January this year when I got a call from Mr Mason advising that my claims had been accepted in full and that a settlement payment of "Upwards of £21,500" was guaranteed by 30/03/2024. All I needed to do was make a further payment of £2,150 to AFK letters. The explanation for why this payment was needed made no sense, but I made it clear that I wasn't happy to make any further payment given AFK's inactivity and the lack of any results since paying the original fee.

No mention of this request had been made at any point in our previous conversations and there's nothing about it in the contract.

I have now taken independent advice and it's clear that the verbal assurances I was given by AFK were entirely without substance and made solely to get me to part with cash up-front. My fears that AFK Letters' operation is a scam appear to have been well justified as this 'business model' closely resembles what I've since learned is known as a Recovery Room Scam.

On 07/02/2024 I submitted a formal complaint and request for a full refund to AFK. I have not received a reply.

I have also submitted a claim to Barclaycard for reimbursement of a fraudulent transaction and reported details of the crime to ActionFraud.

It appears from the many recent posts on Trustpilot that I'm not alone, but I may have been saved from losing the further £2,100 because my card had been replaced since the original transaction. Others have been less fortunate and have had this amount already debited using the same details.

IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO YOU...

Don't waste more time trying to get results from AFK, but do write out a full statement of what happened (you can use mine above as a guide) and use this to:

1. Submit a formal complaint by email to AFK requesting a full refund

2. Submit full details of the crime to ActionFarud on 0300 123 2040

3. Submit a claim for reimbursement to the bank or card company who facilitated the payment to AFK. Include copies of the complaint and any correspondence, plus the reference from the ActionFarud report.

Stay away from this scam

I received a cold call from AFK letters wanting an upfront payment for letters to claim for solar panels compensation. They said the payment would be reimbursed if compensation was not forthcoming.
I have not received any compensation and have not received payment back from them.

Today, nearly one year later, they tried to take a further £1200 from my card. Luckily the bank declined the transaction.
These people are fraudsters!

AFK scammers

Back in April 2022 afk letters contacted us regarding getting compensation for our solar panel. We paid 600 upfront to get the ball rolling (stupid I know) but we did. After many emails etc and the ombudsman being contacted on the 16th Feb this year (2024) we received an email telling us we had received compensation of 11225 and we should confirm this to receive it. We wanted to speak to them first and have been emailing and telephoning daily but no answer or an email saying Rebecca Hall was away and someone would call us back. No one ever has. Today I looked up about afk and found lots of bad reviews and people mentioned about money taken from their credit card, so I checked and guess what 2265 had been taken. I’ve now contacted the credit card and had to start a claim. What a scam, do not entertain these people

AFK letters said we would need to contact the Ombudsman and 17/05/23 they completed the form on our behalf. Today 22/02/24 a year later on from their first contact, I have noticed that £1900 has been taken out of the bank account by AFK letters. This payment was unexpected and wasn’t authorised by me. obviously they have kept my debit card details against my will to reuse again.
