Decided to try Mortgage Bureau ("MB") as we've always stuck with the same brokers and MB were recommended by the David Wilson Homes. We were then passed to an advisor who at first seemed to be keen to get the ball rolling and help us get the right deal. We currently have a port over mortgage and just needed a further top up mortgage for the new home.

The advisor arranged took all the necessary details and then prior to our scheduled meeting, advised me that our current mortgage provider would not give us the mortgage we needed and we're around 40k short. We felt this was odd given 1. We are already a customer and 2. The mortgage needed was less than 4x our combined salaries total.

He then recommended another mortgage but this would mean we would be hit by the early payment charge. As we felt we had no choice we proceeded and then came the mortgage meeting. We discussed the above and then proceeded to protection cover I.e life insurance, etc. After giving us all the bells and whistles he advised us of an absurd sum of roughly £560 per month. This threw us as precious covers arranged through our usual brokers costs around the £100 mark. Some of the cover quoted were not relevant to the work my wife and I do.

By chance our usual brokers called and we decided to check the position with them and they were able to secure a mortgage offer with our current provider contrary to MB's advisors advice and cover came in at the fraction of the cost and was relevant to our needs.

I cancelled the instructions with MB and advised them why I had cancelled and why we were returning to our previous brokers. In short, the advisor was clearly not acting in our interests. He attempted to move us from our current provider and incur a early repayment charge as it was evident that the new mortgage recommended by him would net him a higher commission. There is also the ridiculous quote of the protection cover. He did not listen to our needs after having been told about the extensive cover provided by work.

All in all, I will avoid the company at all costs. Even when I advised them of my concerns they simply closed the case without a formal response to assure me they were acting in our interests.

We’ve been using Mortgage Bureau for nearly a decade now and wouldn’t trust anyone else. Got so used to Daniel being mega efficient that I stupidly thought the whole house buying process would be! Nothing was ever too much of an effort for Dan and he did everything with that inimitable Brummy charm, even when I was making him crunch numbers at 5pm on a Friday. Highly recommend.

From the very start of the process Mortgage Bureau were professional, easy to talk to, reassuring and knew the products that were available to me as a self employed applicant. Dan and Jade were both efficient and very helpful . They say that moving house is one of the most stressful things you will ever do, but using mortgage bureau took a lot of that stress away. On a new build with a 6 week completion target Jade managed to speed up the lenders process to make sure that I could hit that target. Thanks guys!
