Generally ok, lousy immigration
Generally ok. It's in the middle of a major revamp, which means closed shops & boarded up areas right now, but that's temporary.
The place is well signposted, layout is logical enough. People here giving a 1/5 rating can't have travelled very much - there are *far* worse airports around the world!
My problem with the place is immigration / passport control. They have enough booths, they just don't see fit to actually staff them. Waiting times in the queue can be up to 1 1/2 hours. This is something they really need to get sorted out.
Rude staff in cosmetics
I usually wouldn’t go out of my way to review something but I am currently at Schiphol and the one thing I look forward to is going through Duty Free. It is obvious they are pressured to sell and particularly one lady working the cosmetics section was very rude. I am a customer and she made a snide comment to me for trying a tester. I am literally there to try the cream and see if I like it. But I feel she got the impression she wouldn’t sell so she’d rather put me down. I got very put off the whole experience. Considering it’s the only thing to do while waiting and ontop of that the facilities are tiny and in a very unwelcoming layout. I have been to probably over 30 airports and never felt so eager to leave because the staff were so rude.
A delay in my connecting flight from…
A delay in my connecting flight from Frankfurt to Amsterdam meant I had less than 45 minutes to make my flight home when I landed at Schiphol. With no assistance, I moved as fast as I could from my arrival to the departure gate. In between was passport control. (Not sure why, since I hadn’t left the airport…)
When I arrived and saw the huge line, I approached a staff member. Panicking, I blurted out that my flight was boarding. She did the “speak to the hand” gesture (to be fair, she was busy). I waited. She finished and asked to see my boarding pass. I gave it to her. She couldn’t read it, and asked if I had another. I gave her the 2 from my previous flights, and then she realized the first one was indeed the one she wanted, and (reluctantly) waved me through a fast-track line.
At the end of that line, there were 3 agents working. The one directly in front of me was busy with a family of 3, and didn’t appear to be close to finishing. The two agents to my right were moving more quickly. I called out 2X to the man to my immediate right to ask if I could go ahead of him, but he did not respond. Panicking, I jumped ahead of him when the person before him finished, while apologizing and explaining my flight was already boarding.
The border agent, a young man, took umbrage at my cutting, and asked the man who I had cut off what time his flight was, and his answer was significantly later than mine. He then berated me for being rude; I defended myself by saying I had tried to ask, but the man had not answered, as men sometimes don’t when the speaker is a woman. The agent replied that if I cut again, he would send me to the end of the line. Frustrated by this point, I said that I would never come back to Amsterdam again, so that would solve the problem. “Good,” was his reply, as he returned my passport.
People who are hired to work with the public need training in communication and empathy. Apparently that is not provided for employees of Schiphol.
I keep my promises
Stay Away from The Netherlands
1 and a half hours to get through Immigration. The Dutch don’t want you here.
Avoid this airport
Avoid this airport. It’s the worst run airport in the world. All they seem competent at is making people queue for hours because they are so useless that they can’t staff it.
Dingy airport
Dingy airport, workers don't seem to care, often on strike. Everyone I know who flies regularly avoids, including myself

We got into the airport at 10pm for our connected flight after our one to Amsterdam was delayed, so when we arrived for our flight to Newcastle it was gone. We had no help what so ever there was no member of staff in any part of the airport, Harold the security helped us as much as he could. We then had to pay for a hotel and taxi as we had no way of getting home. The next day we were there to book another flight and they were all fully booked. Vanessa lint helped us at the desk and provided us with a hotel and a flight the next day, lovely person and understanding.
Good services
Good services, clean, easy to reach the gates. Always good to be there
Staff trying make a Suzuki feels like a Ferrari - impossible
Great staff!
But airport is not competitive. Too low capacity compared to visitors (staff, amount of stores, restaurants, places to sit) and airport has not been maintained to a level of rest of Europe. (E.g 20 degrees outside today, it’s more warm inside) bad signs to get through to security…
