Unraid is the operating system for people who'd rather own their setup than rent it. Built by Lime Technology since 2005, Unraid turns your own hardware into a powerful, flexible server for storage, media, apps, and virtual machines — mixing drives of any size, protecting your data with parity, and running Docker containers and VMs side by side. It's trusted by hundreds of thousands of self-hosters, from first-time NAS builders to seasoned homelabbers, and backed by one of the most active communities in the space. Your data, your hardware, your rules.

Smooth and flawless experience running my own nas. Excellent support.
Very nice solution for self hosted server setups. No need for elaborate hardware, u less you want to, of course. Just keep adding drives and add them all to one huge volume. Plenty of apps from their own dedicated app store, and many tools an plugins available to satisfy almost any of your home lab needs.
Support for a wide variety of hardware. The docker containers adds value to the Unraid nas.
Interface agréable, utilisation assez simple et une grosse communité.
Unraid used to be the ideal choice to start a homelab, but given the last few updates & feature sets, it's just a great place to have a homelab.
Best software for data storage and multiple uses. I love how versatile it is. Highly recommended.
Really great software for self hosting. Company listens to the community and the ability to use any size drives is a major benefit in this economy. Super easy to set up docker containers and VMs
The Unraid OS is absolutely perfect for those who want to get into the home server business. It is easy enough for the newby and robust enough for the expert.
When I decided to really start my homelab journey in spring 2025 — not counting the ten years before that with first a Synology NAS and later a QNAP — I didn't have much experience with Docker containers or hosting essential services myself.
Unraid was one of the platforms I discovered shortly before my new NAS arrived, and it immediately appealed to me. Even the website made a good first impression: clear, well structured, and easy to understand. I also really liked the idea of buying a lifetime license instead of adding yet another subscription to the list.
What I probably appreciate most today, though, is the community. The support is great, there is an enormous amount of useful information on YouTube and in the forums, and there is a very friendly atmosphere around Unraid. If you run into a problem, chances are somebody has already solved it — and people are genuinely willing to help each other.
I also really like the story behind Unraid. It started as a solution to a very practical personal problem: how to combine a collection of existing hard drives into one useful array. Even today, Unraid still feels much more like a product created by people who actually use and care about it than something designed by a huge anonymous corporation.
With everything I have learned since spring 2025, would I perhaps consider something like Proxmox if I were starting from scratch today? Maybe. Or maybe I would still choose Unraid.
What I do know is that I feel very much at home with Unraid. It gave me an approachable way into self-hosting, Docker and homelabbing, while still leaving me plenty of room to learn, experiment and expand. And whenever something goes wrong, there is a community around it where people help each other.
For me, that counts for a lot.
I've been using UnRAID for more than 14 years now. Its been fast, 100% reliable - and with the use of a Parity Drive - has enabled me to update/replace drives over time without losing data.
I recently built a new server and was *very* pleasantly surprised at the cost to upgrade my ancient v5 UnRAID OS to the latest v7+.
In short: this is a professional, well-supported OS that you *purchase* - its not 'software-as-a-service' or crippleware that requires a subscription to function properly.
100% recommend if you're looking for a reliable and lightweight File Server OS.
Ive tried various free nas software and they weren't very good or very difficult to use. I've used synology and qnap prebuilt nas machines which were great but not very powerful but expensive. Unraid has been brilliant and I will never use anything else again. Its alot cheaper to build your own nas an pay the lifetime license for unraid. Its very simple to use, reliable and full of great features. Ive alot of experience with nas's and using raid with custom built hardware is the only way to go in my opinion. The only downside is I wish i moved to it years ago.
I have been using Unraid for some time and have always appreciated the software's flexibility and community support. However, the recent change to a subscription-based licensing model is extremely disappointing. The new pricing structure feels overly aggressive and does not align with the value I perceive from the software.
What made Unraid stand out was its foundation as open-source software and the significant contributions from the community. The community has built and maintained a vast ecosystem of plugins and containers, which are essential to the platform's success. Without this community effort, Unraid would be just another NAS solution.
The decision to shift to a subscription model not only feels unfair but also shows a lack of appreciation for the community's contributions. For many users, including myself, the cost is now prohibitive, and it feels like the company is prioritizing profit over user satisfaction and community engagement.
I urge Unraid to reconsider this pricing model and find a more balanced approach that respects the community's efforts and keeps the software accessible to all users. Until then, I will be exploring other free and open-source alternatives like Proxmox VE or TrueNAS CORE.
