Poor customer service

I visited a branch to enquire about frames and specialist lenses for an existing eye condition. Unfortunately, I found the experience disappointing.

The staff were standoffish, and I did not feel particularly valued as a potential customer. When I asked about lens pricing and options in relation to my condition, a member of staff chuckled and remarked, "I haven't heard that one before." I found this dismissive and felt that my questions were not taken seriously.

I was then given a leaflet about finance options to take away. Whilst this may have been intended as helpful, I had not expressed any interest in financing my purchase and was simply seeking information about lens options and pricing.

The overall interaction left me feeling embarrassed, unwelcome, and reluctant to continue my enquiry. As a result, I have chosen to purchase my glasses from another retailer, which is a shame as they offer a broad selection of frames. Unfortunately, the customer service did not reflect the quality of the products on offer.

Disgusting after-sales - no response from 3 emails

Well I wasn’t sure whether to update this review or start a new one. Anyway since 27 May there has been progress…
It took a further 2 days before a response was received. And actually only yesterday (11-06-26) before a response was received to my 1-star review. Do I still say after sales service needs work !! However please read this in conjunction with my new review

After writing a glowing review for the in store ‘SALES’ experience I have to post a follow up. It is now TWO WEEKS since the glasses were ordered via the Style Service and nothing has been received.

Three emails, a Facebook messenger message and a Facebook post later - all on the same day and not one person has responded to let me know where my two pairs of glasses are!!

Don’t expect a response

I made a very detailed complaint about my visit on 18 May 2026 to David Clulow in John Lewis store in Oxford Street which was published on the Trust Pilot site. I have yet to have a response on the site but notice those who speak in glowing terms of service received and stars awarded to the company have the courtesy of a reply. This should apply to all complaints whether or not they are in the company’s favour and I am disappointed to say the least.

Excellent service and experience at David Clulow Covent Garden, London

I visited David Clulow in Covent Garden London on 25/05/26. I was only passing but the range and styles of glasses on display was excellent.
Mason (optical advisor) was very friendly, approachable and helped me choose a frame that really suited me whilst also offering alternatives. This then led to a conversation about eye tests and your purchasing scheme. As a result, a test was booked within the hour. Again, Gary, the optician I saw there, was thorough and committed to ensure my prescription was accurate.
I then met with Mason again to complete my order.
From the outset I felt valued as a customer and was very impressed with high quality service I received.
Also my partner (who is already a customer with David Clulow) needed his glasses checking which was done.
An excellent experience and I have no hesitation in recommending this branch-even though I live 80 miles away!

My appointment was with David Clulow in John Lewis Oxford Street - Do your shopping at John Lewis but avoid the opticians.

My appointment was with David Clulow in the John Lewis Store in Oxford Street on Monday 18th May 2026 at 12.15 for eye test and contact lens check up. I found the experience very tense and frustrating when I told the optometrist I had a hearing impairment which she did not seem to take this into consideration when explaining certain points. She recommended cataract surgery which I am happy to have but first and foremost I am waiting for a hip operation . Nevertheless she said she would send a letter by email for me to present to my doctor. At the end of the consultation she declined to release the prescriptions to me until I had the cataract operation as the prescription would change and she would "be happy to revisit" this appointment and then issue prescriptions. I am not happy with this explanation and find it is an unprofessional attitude to take. There is a long waiting list in NHS for cataract operations which could be anywhere between six and twelve months. I am legally entitled to both prescriptions after the consultation, irrespective of whether or not I purchased glasses or contact lens, and I should not have to be battling for these prescriptions. Very disappointed and I will be taking the matter further . Reception staff are not very welcoming apart from the final lady who was very pleasant and wrapped up my purchases of eyelid wipes and eye drops. I have never come across an optician who refused to release specifications before and it left me feeling unhappy and deflated. I have not had any response to my complaint which I feel has just been ignored.

David Clulow opticians in John Lewis…

David Clulow opticians in John Lewis Leeds are a first rate opticians. My husband and I both have complex lenses and our glasses are always excellent. We have been customers for a few years and although we have moved out of the area we still travel back for regular eye tests and glasses. Ella and Kiara provided us with a great customer service on our recent visit. We would highly recommend them.

Amazing service

Amazing service, Harrods Opticians, Andrea Molinaro. At my exam Andrea sent my GP a referral for an issue he saw. He saved my eyesight in my right eye. Extremely grateful for all of your care and expertise.

Katio and Abby gave me a professional

Katio and Abby gave me a professional, personal and pleasant experience when I went for my regular eye test. They walked me through the various options available to me in respect of new spectacles and went at my pace so that I had time to think about what I wanted. They both showed patience and appeared knowledgeable and unrushed. I appreciate the excellent service they gave me.

Absolutely terrible

Absolutely terrible. They measured my right eye axis at 15 when it was at 175 before. had it measured again at 180. They caused me a lot of discomfort with eye strain. The cost and bother of correcting my spec made to that prescription.

Online ordering is not worth the stress

I had a very poor and stressful experience ordering glasses from David Clulow and would not use their online service again.

My order was marked “out for delivery” for a week but never arrived, with repeated conflicting explanations from UPS and customer service including weather delays, customs issues, system problems, and an incorrect claim that I had changed the delivery address.

Tracking showed the parcel moving between multiple locations such as Luton, Stansted and Essex, with no successful delivery attempts to me.

I spent many hours contacting both UPS and David Clulow trying to get clear information or a refund. Despite the parcel appearing lost, I was told I could not be refunded unless the glasses were returned. One customer service adviser also stated they had too many customers to deal with individual cases.

On Friday I was told the parcel would be recalled and I would be refunded, but it was then unexpectedly delivered on Monday morning without any notice or confirmation.

Afterwards, I was offered an apology and a 30% discount for a future online order, but my request to apply this in store instead was ignored, despite me no longer wishing to use their delivery service.

The glasses themselves are fine, but the delivery process and customer service were extremely poorly handled and caused unnecessary stress and inconvenience throughout.

Great for Sunglasses

First time I have visited the store. The staff were really helpful and there was a great selection of sunglasses. Their aftercare is great too.
