Direct Express Needs To Fix Its Internal Issues…
The company told Me they have internal issues. My request is they fix what is broken. I've got a claim pending for over $270 right now. Right now my card has been locked. I asked why and they said because of me sending money to PayPal. I actually use PayPal to pay for things because I know Direct Express will sooner or later lock my card so I want some money somewhere... frustrating.
Rude and unhelpful
Unfortunately my experience with Direct Express in the last year has prompted my actions to transfer my account with SSI to my account. I no longer want anything to do with this Direct Express Company ever as long as I'm living & breathing. Never has the mobile app worked correctly. Ever single time I try to check my balance or look at my account information it freezes and shuts down. When I rest or they unlock the account I can't access because of password being wrong. Crazy because I save my Angels immediately to avoid this issue. So when you call your on hold for 2 or more hours then they simply hang-up on you when they finally do answer the phone.
I've been loyal to Direct Express for more then 12 years. Most people I I counter have already transferred their direct deposit to their personal account.
At one time they were quick to answer and fix any problems I was experiencing. No it's terrible you just get hung up on and if you do get some money on the line they're rude as hell.
You would think I'm being with the government and somebody would fix this issue not only that since day one there's been nothing but trouble with these stupid cards as far as being able to go on your phone and check your information they need to go with a different company apparently for their mobile app because it sucks.

Absolutely the worst. We've been told our documents aren't trustworthy for over a year now, and if they don't hand over the replacement card this time we file a complaint/case with the Consumer Finance Protections Bureau. We've been hung up on twice, both times after hours-long waits. ALL wait times are at least an hour long, and almost always longer.. and one wait time will lead to another, in the same call.
When you read the thousands of Reddit posts saying to LEAVE their service as soon as you're able, believe them. If they haven't wrecked your fragile finances yet, take that as a sign to prioritize leaving NOW/TODAY, before they can, because apparently it's only a matter of time.
Honestly, I imagine this "bank" has literally ended some folk's lives, via disrupting their fixed-income limited finances.
Pick what they want to pay with your money
No has mentioned the fact that even though it is your money they will not let purchase go through even on stupid stuff for ten dollars and now other banks are charging 4 dollars to use ATM found that out today thank you for most awesome beautiful job
This card does not protect my money from scammers.

I posted on X, and someone pretending to be DoorDash called me, offering a refund if I downloaded the WorldRemit app. I entered my info, but they withdrew money and claimed it was a mistake. Despite trying to cancel, the money was sent within five minutes. I contacted Direct Express, received a $200 credit pending investigation, but they blamed me for sharing my info and can't help further and took my 200 credit back. I never realized how much 200 can hurt if I receive SSI monthly payments for essentials in life. All this crap is the racist affluent white people are messing up this world of life.

I’m new to this card worst customer service ever when calling the number on the back of the card it’s impossible to get anyone I’ve been on the phone for an hour now just to hear that stupid music and to hear our representatives are still busy we appreciate your patience my patience is running thin with this card I called last night to get the same make no sense could someone give me advise on another way to get in touch with these people I would greatly appreciate it

I have gone through the verification process three months since I’ve opened this bank account and they continuously don’t let me access my money. I’ve never had this problem to this degree with any bank ever and they are now I’m even facing an eviction and they never answer the phone. I’m always on hold it an hour and a half to two hours before they even pick up and even then they just hang up on me once they give her the information they feel like they need to provide if I have any further questions. They literally just hang up. I’m so frustrated and disgusted and I can’t even access any money to change accounts or do anything else with this bank because there’s no branch in my area I don’t understand why they were assigned to me. I think they should be shut down or rehire entirely new staff or retrain them or something but they have no access not through email not through a phone calling and they are just continuously lock up my money and it is horrible.

I got a new phone back in December of 2025 and what I tried to install their app on my new phone I was told I'd been flagged for fraud. I've called repeatedly to try and get in touch with their fraud department and have waited on hold forever only to be hung up on. Right now I've been on the phone on hold for an hour and 15 minutes just so I can get the app back on my new phone. I've had enough I've used direct Express since 2014 and it just keeps getting worse. I'll find another option but I'm not going to continue this garbage anymore.

if I could give it -5 I would please think long and hard before you choose this option for your social security checks The customer service is absolutely positively by far the worst I have ever encountered in my life when you read the reviews that say they are on hold for 2 hours they are not exaggerating every single time I've had to call them and I've had to call a lot I've been put on hold between an hour and an hour and 40 minutes they make it extremely difficult the customer service people are not friendly at all and it is like pulling teeth to have any issue resolved they will put a stop on your card without any notice and then make you jump through hoops to have it activated again. The only way to get results is to file a complaint first and good luck with that information took me two days to find out how to do that Good luck
There's something a really shady going on here
Shady is the first word that comes to mind when it comes to direct Express prepaid debit card I've been fighting with these people for months to unlock my card then came January 26th I have just went to the DMV here in the state of Nevada and got a new ID so I have the paper ID they unlocked my card for 3 days I ordered two pizzas on the third day and on that third day they relocked up my card.... When I had called them and this is a famous saying that they do have cuz I've been hearing it for months resending your ID when I had just sent it in 3 days prior to that my ID card came in the mail and I emailed it to direct Express they denied it which is so epic to me because my paper ID and the car ID are too in the same it's the same thing so they approved the paper but not the ID card itself sounds shady doesn't it long story short this month March on the 9th 2026 I went to Utah and went to the social security office they moved my money to a different card that I have so direct Express no longer gets my deposits and I told them this if I'm not who I am how was I able to stop my money from going to them common sense they don't seem to have it..... But from all the past months they are keeping that money my regular checks now come to me yes starting April but all that money on that stupid card that they have locked up because they're acting like it's theirs when it's not! So this last Sunday I've sent in my stupid ID again now they want me to send it again that's the only thing these idiots can ever say send in your ID sending your ID nothing is happening I'm drowning here can't buy food I can't pay to have water can't take showers I can't have my underage daughter back yet because of this trauma I'm beyond mad... I can't even have an active phone who are they to say whether I live or die who are they to say that I can't pay my water bill who are they to say that I can't pay my space lot rent my power is getting ready to be shut off and the way that direct Express acts on the phone I've been yelled at I've been cursed that but I tell you what they have a big attitude because they're on the phone a direct express was right in front of me that they have some respect...... And every time I have talked to customer service they're all hoity snooty booty I mean they honestly really think they're running the show when they're not it's not their money that's my disability money it belongs to me now I'm thinking lawsuit so I would suggest to anyone that has direct Express get out of it or if you're thinking about getting it don't save yourself the headache trust me

Will update when this is resolved. The government opened this account for me due to needing a secondary payee. Social Security deposited a check for backpay on Feb 4th. It is March 19th, and there is still no deposit. They cannot even confirm it arrived until it clears. It has been 6 weeks. I'm petrified and absolutely screwed. Everyone knows these wait times are years as it is, and the government contracts with an entity like this?! Where is the money?! I have already called my lawyer and will be notifying the federal authorities if this does not show up immediately. Will update this review when resolved.

This company lacks customer service of any sort... As a company who primarily works with elderly customers, there should be an option other than phone calls. I have been on hold for more than 45 minutes. The online site is not recognizing my new card number or the mobile app. Calling is the only option. Why is there no chat feature?? OR anything else to support individuals with limited digital literacy? Why is this the only option to get SSI without a bank account? This is unacceptable!
Unauthorized transaction
Direct Express took 20.49 off my debit card today 3/7/26. They said Domino Pizza took it off because I didn’t pay for my pizza in January. That’s false. I contacted Dominos and spoke with the manager several times she said they didn’t take it off my debit card because they don’t do stuff like that. Customer Service was rude and kept saying the merchant took it off Dominos said they have nothing to do with because I dont owe them any money. Direct Express took the 20.49 off my card. Dominos said they didn’t do it. Direct Express won’t put the amount back on my card. Isn’t that like stealing?

If I could give a lower star I would this card service is the worst I've ever encountered why have 24/7 customer service I called 9 times in 2 days and never spoke to anyone please stay away from them at all cost

Absolutely Horrible!! Their customer service department are not informed nor are they polite or helpful in any way. Terrible people who don’t have answers and don’t know what to do. They hung up on me because I wanted to know why they declined my transactions while have plenty of money in my account. This was happening all day long when I tried to pay my bills. Hands down one of the worst customer service departments I have ever dealt with!
