Not the best reviews here but my experiences here are good, I remember that volunteers give up their time to make a difference and they try their best. It is also 24 hours a day which not many places are.

I don’t know what happened to Shout?
I used to get support/comfort from the conversations.
I texted a lot at one point and for a while I got the “you’ve texted a lot” responses; that took a while to be deactivated.
Since then I’ve just either not been able to get through (despite waiting many hours) or got through and it seems like the responses are AI generated because they’re so generic and don’t link in with what I’m saying. The volunteers don’t continue the conversation; they just say “haven’t heard from you for a while”. Then soon they send a resource (can be very irrelevant) and say they are closing the chat.
I want to be grateful like I was at the start but I don’t know what’s happened here.

Not just unhelpful, but dangerous.
Does the company provide contractual services and receive public funds to do so?
None of the staff are clinically qualified to perform risk assessments and this poses a great danger to the public; especially since this number is given out as a safeguarding contact routinely across a plethora of services alongside 999 and 111(2.)

On hold for 30 mins, talked for 45. Over text. Worse than talking to ChatGPT about it did nothing not calming, or caring, acts so neutral it feels like your in the wrong,

Incredibly scary. AI chat responds to you before you have even responded (so it is reading what you are writing) It can also (somehow see what you are googling at the same time and starts to respond on that, before you have......
Also, all the jobs are made up and don't exist. I will be contacting my bank and looking itno fraud

I have used shout a few times the first time was a couple of years ago and it was good. After the conversation I felt more relaxed the second time less so but still ok.
The last time I used the service was dreadful. I was unheard. I basically told them I was hurting myself and couldn't keep myself safe. Then they ended the conversation. I then managed to get the will power to call 111. All good now but not thanks to shout.

the woman took forever to reply. felt like i was talking to chat gpt. said she wasn’t a medically trained professional just because i said i had relapsed. also took forever to respond and had a conversation for like 10 minutes across the space of hours response and told me conversation was about to end. i told her “ur not very helpful are you” and she closed chat.

this is not an advice/help service but a met police initiative known internally within the police force as operation shout hence why their advice and help they offer or don't offer isn't up to much and this service should be terminated

shout was genuinely the most USELESS “helpline” i’ve ever dealt with in my life. i waited 20 minutes — TWENTY — just for them to reply with the driest, most empty, scripted crap imaginable. i kept straight up ASKING for advice, multiple times, literally spelling it out, and they fully ignored every single thing i said. it was like talking to a brick wall that studied customer service.
every message they sent sounded like it was copy-and-pasted from a training manual written by someone who’s never had a single human emotion. “i’m hearing your dilemma” — no you’re not babe, you’re hearing NOTHING because you’re not even READING. i could’ve screamed into a cereal box and got more empathy back.
the whole conversation felt like they were legally required to type 8 lines of robotic filler before getting to the point — except they NEVER got to the point. zero listening. zero effort. zero answers. just template after template after template, like a broken chatbot that refuses to admit it’s broken.
i reached out because i was stressed, confused, and actually needed support. instead i got dry, delayed, dead responses that made me feel worse than before. honestly? shout is NOT a helpline — it’s a slow-loading auto-reply machine pretending to care.
if you want real help, literally ANYTHING else would be better. flip a coin. ask a stranger. text your toaster. at least those things would give you something real instead of this emotionally flat, painfully scripted nonsense.

Wow shout supervisor came in the chat and closed it straight down. I explained I just didn’t want to be alone. I already went to A&E , I already called 999 yesterday. I thought this is what you are here for. Thank you for being my very final let down.

Awful. But then again, many of these services are severely underfunded and the demand is very high. Such a great idea but very poorly executed I think. What a shame.

I messaged shout in the early hours of this morning after being very unwell with my mental health. it’s now 4 hours later and i’ve still not got a response. i completely understand that it’s busy &’more people probably needed more help than i did… but my good mental health is so underfunded in the uk. i really needed someone & i once again proved all i have is myself & thank god i was able to snap out of it before it got too late

I texted the service in significant distress citing, among other things, feelings of isolation. Over two hours of sitting in the dark staring at the screen later, when I received the second text directing me to the same information page, I gave up and found another avenues of support. Trying to get in contact with Shout actually exacerbated the situation in this case.

I was sceptical about how much they could help me but I was desperate so I texted. The length of time in between texts told me they were busy and/or, to an already anxious mind, not interested/didn’t care.
As others have said, it’s stock phrases, empty answers. So they say the right words but it just feels hollow.
I was given links to some local resources but they seem just as useless. Lip-service, as someone else on here pointed out. That’s exactly what this service is. Pointless and a waste of time.

Person was nice enough, 0 real help. I told them how I was feeling and they asked what helps me feel better, I told them and the person said "that is good to identify" then the chat just went silent. I followed up and said Im struggling, then they just closed the chat. Would not recommend, genuinely feels like talking to an ai
