Terrible service

Terrible service. Had begun receiving questions about what I was going through and then due to where I work, I lost signal for a while. Just ten minutes went by and got signal again, and they said it was closed and to contact them again if I needed help. Tried to do so, waited a couple of hours and gave up. Awful service.

I am very very grateful for this…

I am very very grateful for this service. It’s not the same as ongoing therapy and the volunteer can’t solve complex problems, I think it’s important to be realistic about that, but they have been very kind and it was so helpful to be able to communicate like this in difficult moments.

The aim of a conversation with a Shout Volunteer is to share your thoughts and feelings over the course of a conversation lasting around 45 minutes and to come up with some positive next steps.

In an extremely limited number of cases, the support we can offer as a text-based listening service is not enough so we may share information with other parties to keep people safe, if we believe those texting us are at imminent risk. What people wish to share with their volunteer is always within their control.

If someone is unable to keep safe we always advise they call 999 or 111 for immediate support.

Someone named zenny ended the text…

Someone named zenny ended the text message when I told her I needed help. This is what they call "support" 😂. Someone can be screaming out in pain wanting to be listened to and they'd do the opposite and end the chat. Great. Thanks SHOUT and thank you Zenny. you've been such great help. NOT.

I've actually tried this service before a few months ago and the same thing happened. How do you expect people to open up to someone that claims to work for mental health when the responses sound robotic and also the people don't care? 45 minutes for a conversation? No thanks. I'm better off keeping it to myself and never using these services again. Pointless and now I feel even worse. Thank you Zenny and yes I am going to name you because you've made me feel worse.

These people aren't trained. They probably say trained volunteers to make it sound legit. Yeah right.

This is my first and last time I will ever reach out to a mental health specialist or service ever again.

I'm not reaching back out to explain nothing. The service at shout isn't good. You can't convince me otherwise end of

I needed someone and I was left waiting

Was having a bad mental episode, my thoughts were spiralling and I had no one to talk to so I wanted to give Shout a try. I needed to talk to someone but I was left waiting in my thoughts for about 15 minutes which felt like an eternity. Waiting made me feel worse, like no one was actually around to help me. I ended up being hospitalised because of my severe panic attack which caused a seizure.
This could have been prevented.

Surprised I'm still alive....

Many a time I try to contact and left for hours and no one responds. I've had one response thus far and the person I spoke to didn't listen nor acknowledge half of the things I asked or wanted to mention. Currently waiting for them again. It's been nearly 2 hours and no one wanted to know.

Mental health

My friend has messaged the last 2 nights in a row to say she’s struggling and wants help which is a hard thing for her to do as she never reaches out as she always gets let down and no one listens and she’s received no help at all. All they are doing is repeating themselves and asking questions that she’s already answered. The fact that this is a “mental health” support line and you only get 45 mins to talk to someone which seems like a robot is diabolical. Helps lines like this just goes to show how messed up and broken the mental health system is which is a shame when there’s so many people are out there these days struggling with mental health and don’t get the support they deserve and end up in the worst possible way as they ask for the help and get turned away.

It can be immensely hard to find the strength to reach out for help when we need it the most and we're sorry she's not got the support she is seeking.

Most of our conversations last 45 minutes to allow us to reach as many people as possible and we find in this time there's room to share and explore in a non-judgemental atmosphere. People are welcome to text back in again another time if they wish.

We can't offer ongoing support and each conversation is treated as new so this may explain why similar questions were asked. Some people may struggle with the same issue for a long time and others might vary so we treat each one individually and offer in-the-moment support.

Sharing what kind of support you feel might help you best with your volunteer can also help direct them to help you more effectively.

Thank you for helping your friend and for speaking on their behalf - we appreciate your feedback and hope they'll give us another go.

They will just get you to fester in you feelings not care about real issues and move on to the next call , it appears

Just like the Samaritans and most other ,false crisis lines. They get you to open up and approximately 30 minutes later; They more or less leave you to fester in the feelings and past and present experiences, you've just congested your mind with . So if you enjoy the equivalent of being stuck in a tub soaking in your own dirty bath water with the plug stuck. This might be a good place to open up.
The responses are robotic and the sign posting is infuriating , as it's mainly the same dead end services you will get from the Samaritans and Mind.
I'm very glad that I read the reviews on here before , giving them a go. So I did not open up too much as it appears one of the reviewers got in trouble for telling them how he really felt I would not put up with clows like these turning my life upside down so they can show me even more that they are just there for their own agenda and not to make my life anymore bearable . They are far from a safe space to vent and should stop using the name shout , a word which conveys a sense of free expression. They just take you through the motions and don't seem to care if you feel you have been heard let alone helped. In short another institution , I would not be surprised if the static sign posting they give you, is send around in some type of folder or a circular by their managers. Doubt they have tested them out first hand before telling other people to jump in.? It seems it's all about getting people done and moved in 30 minutes keeping call numbers high. So they can state to their funders and the gullible media that they are making a difference in a positive way. Herding people on to services that often either don't work as they should or are just there to sell something is a disgrace. This non service should be closed down and a helpline established that is a 100 per cent confidential and people can speak or text in , intellectual freedom without worrying about triggering some jobs worth .

With AI being so prevalent it's understandable that people may feel our service is AI powered but our volunteers are real trained people who give their time up to share it with others. Felt like talking to someone who wasn’t really there…

Really felt more like it was me talking, empty responses, not really supportive and the conversation fell flat and I left.

less support then I can get from other services from Samaritans, long wait so wouldn’t actually say it works for a crisis.

However they did link to a resource which looks like it might help so I’ll give them two stars.

It will just make you feel worse don’t put yourself through it just complete a let down

Some AI crap or some idiot reading from a script it’s free because it doesn’t work like the rest of the NHS just don’t bother it’ll just put you in a worse place than before you contracted them

Pointless

Messaged because I don’t want to talk and my young family were about and wanted some text support.
No response apart from occasional.. we are busy and we rely on volunteers.
That’s ok but remove yourself on google as one of the first hits!
With mental health problems I can’t talk on a phone and thought this was a great alternative… however I never got to text. Pointless service

Thanks for your review. From your message it's hard to tell if you were connected to one of our volunteers or if you were still receiving our automated messages while you were in line to reach a volunteer.

As a 'silent' support service, ours can be ideal when a voice call isn't possible or for people who may struggle to talk on the phone.

We truly hope you'll give us another try when you want to have a conversation with our trained volunteers and share your feelings and thoughts. Once you are connected to our automated system you will be in line to be answered but this may take longer than we would like.

Don't text in crisis.

I truly don't know how they have the audacity to respond to so many reviews here with the same cut/paste.
The bottom line really is that this service is stretched so thin that there is no quality, no care ... and so many people here that turned to Shout at the end of their rope and wound up feeling worse.

Pointless

Took nearly 24 hours to respond and felt like I was chatting to an AI bot, stuck to a script and didn't acknowledge mentions of self harm and suicidal ideation.
If I just wanted to be given links I'd of stuck to a Google search.

unbelievable wait times!

unbelievable wait times! I messaged at 19:46 and still had nothing at 2AM the next day. I ended up giving up and leaving the queue because I was too tired to stay up. 'there's always ways to get help' yeah right. such a shame that this is the stuff you have to put up with in the worst of holes.

Absolutely pointless
30 mins to connect to someone.

Offered no help just paid lip service. For example I said doctors had suggested I try Samaritans, but I couldn’t face a phone call, she replied saying “lots of people struggle on the phone”, no further follow up or questions. No attempts to keep conversation going. No help or advice signposted. Asked me what I wanted her to do and I’m like I don’t know, I need help what can you offer, you’ve not really helped whatsoever yet. She then send me:
“that's ok, perhaps we can see how go at working a way forward together”

Then offered nothing and closed the chat 10 minutes later.

Literally useless.

A couple of times I’ve felt I needed to…

A couple of times I’ve felt I needed to speak to someone but it feels a waste of time, you send the text and get automated messages but either fall asleep due to the long wait and miss the text back hours later or just give up out of frustration. The idea behind it seems a nice idea but you need get more people on the lines, it just leads to further frustration and feeling even further isolated from help
