All of these reviews are true - it's amazing Shout doesn't acknowledge or try to fix this. I've tried multiple times to access the service, never get a response in under two hours, and when I do it's like an AI bot. People are in need and the lies on the website give false expectations that just leave callers feeling worse, unwanted and unheard. Terrible and potentially harmful service.

Do not use this service. It will make your mental health WORSE. It does not work, if they even bother getting back to you it will be hours and hours later. And they are desperate to end the conversation.
Do yourself a favour and seek help elsewhere because Shout ruins lives.

Studying as a counsellor, being honest the staff answers/comments are robotic, in scary way all standard. No sympathy or empathy used in chats.
Try using sentences like, I'm here for you, remember this is your safe place, I believe in you. Chats are typical and copied and pasted. Can we signpost you or can we give you resources? Which means we don't know what to say to help you.
Staff/volunteers have no experience even though they talk to people in crisis everyday.
When I'm in crisis, they tell me we're closing the chat, go call 111, even though there support line is for people in crisis.
Service is misleading, if you contact them every day they put a limit on you, stating you can only contact them in 48 hours. The charity don't advertise this. Not sure why the charity is called shout when they put a limit on the number of times your allowed to contact them too much, maybe they should call the charity mute, instead?
Staff/volunteers can't deal with people in crisis, they're not qualified enough.
Got to be honest I 1000% recommend Samaritans they have real life experience, all ages, say kind things, seems more humane and real

i contacted them yesterday (08/03/25) and I knew it was international woman's day so i knew it would of took a while to get though but when i finally did get though to someone the person said to me are you okay i said i was and just ended the chat I wanted to talk about my problems with sleep.

Would give it nothing if I could. Awful con of a service on people at their lowest. Claims to be free,utter nonsense,asked me to type anything, I was having a panic attack, and it's not like me to go on anything like this anyway but I needed to talk to SOMEONE, I started typing and it took me to a different page asking for payment. Plus I'm sure it will all be AI.

Was my first time using the service and I’ve never used one of these services before. Honestly I wish I hadn’t. All the responses from “Rose” sounded completely automated and after a multiple long messages at the beginning outlining how I felt and what was going on the only response I got was “are you having thoughts of suicide”
The entire conversation sounded like I was talking to an AI bot and the “help” that I was provided was just links to random apps that aren’t going to help me in the slightest.
I just wanted someone to talk to…

What an absolute joke of a service. Do not attempt these if you really need help as they'll say we're trying to get to then follow that with a "text stop if you don't want to wait". Hopefully I get through this

The wait to speak to someone wasn't too bad but when someone did connect to me all they did was say things like "that does sound bad" or things to that effect. Nothing about what I could do or anything specific about what I was saying. Just felt like talking to some AI bot. Honestly made me wanna kill myself more than I did before talking to them.

This service offers nothing, they barely respond and I believe this service is causing more harm than good to individuals who are struggling and should be ceased.

One of the times in October I used shout to reach out as I was not okay and it took them hours to reply and by the time it came round I was lying in a hospital bed because I tried to take my life, another time last night I tried to reach out for self harm they never answered and I ended up self harming due to them not answering personally what is the point in having an urgent helpline if they won’t answer people who are trying to reach out are going to end up doing things to themselves because they take too long or just don’t answer

I have tried using this service twice now. And both times I have never spoken to a person. I understand that the service may be busy but to just be ignored while “waiting” isn’t very helpful.

I’ve tried using SHOUT many times as I’m not able to use phone crisis services. I know nighttime is likely to be busier but I can’t recall someone ever getting in touch with me before 4 hours. Like many others have said, so much can happen in that time. You can’t operate as a crisis service if you don’t offer immediate support.
I also find it wilding unhelpful that there’s never any indication of how long you’ll need to wait to speak to someone. I would actually find it more reassuring if at least I know it would be a couple of hours till I speak to someone.
I desperately try to give this service chance after chance but I’m let down every single time. I cannot in good conscience recommend this service as it’s never once helped me.

Useless. You will have to wait for hours to be connected to someone who is clueless. Then after 15 minutes of not really listening or helping they will offer to email you a ‘list of distractions’ to help you cope with bereavement, abuse and suicide. Absolutely useless service.

It's just someone doing a Google search!! Awful service especially as it's the default for mental health if you search for that. Some of the link sent weren't even in this country! And it's all text based. Talk to someone, definitely don't use this site

This was absolutely unhelpful. I felt like I was talking to a robot. All they do is ask questions like "what do you think you could do to help make you feel better" if I new that I wouldn't be seeking help. I don't need a test, I need someone to give me advice not try to make me think and guess what I shoould do. Anyways big NOPE not for me.

Mental health is my worst experience. As soon as I’m in my own space either way anyway. Nothing deserves to be trapped in hell and earth is clearly hell this is what they don’t explain enough. It’s why it hurts my head but anyway I can’t be arsed thinking about it no more. I guess we have to learn at some point that it is clear to see that sexuality isn’t real and they are actually killing people with it.

People reach out to you because they genuinely feel they can’t get the support system anywhere else but I felt very disappointed in the time limit of the conversation. I was just starting to open up and bare my emotions when I was met with a response of “is there anything else I can help with?” Which proceeded with seconds later of “I’m going to close the chat”. They didn’t even give me the opportunity to respond. There should never be a time limit on such a sensitive situation. If you don’t have enough volunteers to cater for longer conversations, then you shouldn’t be allowed to practice.
